Making Cappuccino

Songwriter Billy Mann collaborated with P!nk on ‘The One That Got Away’ and he has been with her since 2003.  This song was recorded on her 2006 I’m Not Dead album and on her 2007 P!nk Box album.  The release of I’m Not Dead was preceded by its controversial lead single, ‘Stupid Girls’, a top 20 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and this video allowed P!nk to win an MTV Video Music Award.  There is not a whole lot to say about this song, as it is simply about a girl who meets a guy that leaves a lifelong impression on her.  Her knees buckled when she first sees this guitarist playing, and she becomes embarrassed when everyone starts to stare at her, but the guitarist saves her life by continuing with the song.  She declares this man to be hers, at least in her mind, maybe just for the night or for a short while.  She is still with this guy two weeks later and they are making cappuccino and laughing together.  She realizes that he belongs to someone else and he is not the one that she wants, but she seems to be perfectly happy for him to be the one that got away.

Alecia Beth Moore was born on September 8, 1979 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and she is professionally known as Pink, which is often stylized as P!nk.  At the age of 14, she got her stage name after watching in Quentin Tarantino’s crime film Reservoir Dogs, which she saw with her friends and it had a character in it named Mr. Pink, which her friends all felt she resembled, which is probably a compliment as Mr. Pink was able to remain cool under pressure.  Many people think that her name is derived from her pink hair, but when she got this name her hair was green.  There is another story behind her nickname which is a bit raunchier, as her best friend at a YMCA summer camp had never seen a white girl’s vagina before, so he asked her if he could see hers.  She showed him her goods and he said, “It’s pink!”, then she got the name Pink.  Another version says she got this name because her face turned bright pink after being embarrassed in front of a boy she liked, either way she should be grateful that her friends didn’t think that she resembled Mr. Yellow.  Like her name, P!nk is a bit of a mystery, especially to me, as I have heard some of her music, but I don’t know much about her yet, however after reading about her charity work, the causes that she gets involved with and events that she attends, she seems like a great lady that I would like to know more about.  The 35-year-old posed naked in 2014 for a PETA advertisement, saying that she would rather go naked than wear fur and letting everyone know that they should be comfortable in their own skin, so animals could keep theirs.

One evening, an executive from MCA took notice of the sassy teenager and asked her to audition for an R&B Punk all female trio Basic Instinct that was forming.  She is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress and she was originally a member of the girl group Choice which came to a quick end in 1998.  She gained a lot of recognition with her collaborative single ‘Lady Marmalade’ from the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack, which topped many charts worldwide.  P!nk evolved over her career, changing from a wild, pink-haired punk to a sophisticated blonde star.

P!nk started to display a more sophisticated look in the early 2000s wearing nice gowns and trading her black bob in for a blonde crew cut, wearing smokey eye makeup along with simple jewelry, and she knew how to use all of her assets in these stunning elegant dressesShe mastered that braless look and combined it with see-through tops, and this new fashion statement became an indication of her incredible body confidence and exposed how fearless she is.  P!nk has created her own particular niche and she never fails to impress me with her awesomeness, not just because she is comfortable posing in the buff, but because she is the total pop-star package and she makes the perfect cover girl.  P!nk admitted that just four years earlier, that she woke up and realized that she still had a lot to learn, whereas before that, she felt that she knew everything.  Growing up looks good on her and it is nice to see that she was becoming a real fashion superstar.  Her 2007singles ‘Who Knew’ and ‘U + Ur Hand’ both became top ten singles in the US.

Pink said she titled the album I’m Not Dead because “It’s about being alive and feisty and not sitting down and shutting up even though people would like you to.”  She said it came from “the awakening” and how “it felt good to feel again”.  In December 2007, a special edition Pink Box, which comprises her second to fourth albums (Missundaztood, Try This and I’m Not Dead) along with the DVD Live in Europe, was released in Australia.  It reached the #13 on the Australia albums chart it went to #7 in the UK.  Pink Box was certified BPI Gold, and ARIA Platinum.  Aside from her music, Pink has been noted for her fashion style, and she considers herself to be kind of a hippie and kind of a gangster, but it is her thing.  Pink has been credited for breaking boundaries and pushing the envelope throughout her career.  She is regarded as the “most trailblazing artist” of her pop generation.  She is everything you’d want in a singer/entertainer/icon, but she is still underappreciated for her talent.

P!nk was named #12 in the UK Music Hall of Fame of the 21st century, her vocal skills have often been compared to that of the late Janis Joplin, whom P!nk cites as one of her idols, the other one is Madonna.  In 2018, she appeared on Forbes’ list of “Highest Paid Female Celebrities”, with the earnings of $52 million.  According to Nielsen SoundScan, P!nk’s record sales stand at 16 million copies in the United States.  Pink has sold over 40 million albums and 50 million singles worldwide, making her one of the world’s best-selling music artists.

Mmmm mm yeah
Oh oh
I stood by the exit door of the hotel cafe
He was playing with his band
I’ve always been a sucker had a weakness for a boy
With a guitar and a drink in his hand
His words were like heaven in my hurricane
My knees buckled under
I thought everyone was watching me
Watching you save my life with the song

You were mine
In the back of my mind
Oh just for one night
Just for a while

There’s always one that gets away
The one that sneaks up on you that slips away

Two weeks later I was sitting in his apartment
He was making cappuccino
I said what kind of man makes cappuccino
We laughed
We laughed
We laughed
We laughed til tears ran down my face

Oh but my man you’re someone elses man
And that aint the man that I want
But you keep drawing me in with those big brown lyin’ eyes

You’ll always be mine
In the back of my mind
Oh we had a night
Just a little while

There’s always one that gets away
The one that sneaks up on you that slips away

In a closed off corner of my heart yes
I’ll always see your face
The one that got away
One that got away
The one that got away
The one that got away
Oh the one that got away
The one that got away
Oh the one that got away
The one that got away
Oh the one that got away
Yeah yeah
Oh oh oh oh
Yeah yeah
Oh

I’m not a victim of cliches
I don’t believe in soul mates
Happy endings only one
Oh and I met you and all that changed
I had a taste and you’re still sitting on the tip of my tongue

You were mine
Somewhere in time
I’ll look for you first
In my next life

There’s always one that gets away
The one that sneaks up on you that slips away
Slips away
In a closed off corner of my heart yeah yeah yeah yeah
I, I’ll always see your face
The one that got away
(The one that got away)
The one that got away
(The one that got away)
Oh the one that got away
(The one that got away)
Oh the one that got away
(The one that got away)
The one that got away
Yeah yeah
Oh oh yeah
The one that got away

  1. I really enjoyed reading about Pink. She is one of my favorites. I forget what girl group she was with before she branched out solo. What a prolific career she’s had. Awesome song choice today Jim.

  2. Hi, Jim, it was nice to look in tonight at Song Lyric Sunday. I was entertained by your choice of Pink. I remember the years of the 2000s discovering I could burn pirated music to writable compact discs, that I thought a song like U + Ur Hand would add some cheek to a CD.

It’s obvious I didn’t go pro, but I remember finding that music gorgeous to play about with.
