All Hook and No Fat

Power pop can be described as the merger of a hard rock sound with mainstream pop, and it is based on the early music of bands such as the Who, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, The Kinks, Badfinger, the Byrds, The Raspberries, The Move, Big Star, Nazz, and followed by bands that came later like Cheap Trick, The Knack, The Romantics, The Cars, and The Smithereens.  Power pop is a harder type of pop-rock that combines classic rock band instrumentation of guitar, bass, drums, and occasional keyboards with catchy pop hooks highlighting the lead vocalist.  Power pop music is often recognized for its powerful lead vocals and recognizable guitar riffs.  Power pop is literally pop music with power, catchy tunes with an attitude.  It refers to an energetic interpretation of pop rock, based in equal parts on melodic hooks and killer instinct.  It typically incorporates melodic hooks, vocal harmonies, an energetic performance, and cheerful sounding music underpinned by a sense of yearning, longing, or despair.  Power pop emerged in the 1960s and still influences artists today.  Pete Townshend is credited as the originator of the name “power pop.”  He used the phrase to describe the type of music that The Who performed.

Last week we had Independent Music where the theme was to find Indie Rock or Indie Pop songs.  This week the theme is to find Power Pop songs.  Take some time to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this music challenge, and even better, read as many of them as you can as you will probably find many enjoyable songs and it is quite possibly that you will learn a thing or two.  Share your music with others and post a video, try do some research and let everyone know something about the song that you post.  Tell everyone why you like the song, whether it was a hit, or what you think the song is about.  Show the lyrics, let’s all listen to our favorite songs and explore some new music.  Try to find a song that fits the theme, then write your post and create a pingback, or you can just place your link in the comments section.

Suggestions
• Try to use the prompt words or at least conform to a general theme, as you see it.  If the song you select does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• It would be good if you could post the lyrics to the song of your choice, as this is helpful for the people that want to follow along with the music.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due. It would also be a good idea to give credit to the singer and the band associated with your song.
• Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be, but please try not to include too many videos as that just makes it take longer to look at all of the other posts.
• Link to the YouTube video, or you can pull it into your post, so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.

This week I will be writing about the Avril Lavigne song ‘Girlfriend’, and next week, I will be writing about the song ‘Needles And Pins’ by The Searchers.  The upcoming prompts will be:

          1. That’s the beauty of it for me: those changes encourage us to find out more about different styles of music. Several of the posts linked today describe the writers’ searches for an explanation of what the genre is!

  1. The Lemon Twigs are one of the more modern power pop bands. I recommend the album; ‘Go To School’.

    Teaching at the school
    Feeling like a fool
Tell me what I did wrong
Everbody use to love my songs
Now I’m just a teacher mum

    What a big mistake
    My taking in an ape
Killed my rock ‘n’ rolling dreams
The boy who loves a big tall trees and me
    Well I belong in ammity

    Maybe I’ll play rock
    And then I’ll play along
    Yeah, yeah, yeah

    Wake up the kid
    Good morning its breakfast
I know you how you like your bananas
    Quit with the screeching
    Schools in an hour
    Well my dreams are dying
    You’ll be multiplying
You’re gonna like your new school

    Shane doesn’t know
    That very long ago
When dad and I were still quite thin
Oh we came upon a baby chimp
Decided that we’d take it in
    Forgetting all our dreams
We took him as it seems
    We had a little family
For seven hundred bucks a week, I teach
And it pays for all the food Shane eats
    And he eats a lot

    Maybe I’ll play rock
    And then I’ll play along
    Yeah, yeah, yeah

    Wake up the kid
    Good morning its breakfast
I know you how you like your bananas
    Quit with the screeching
    Schools in an hour
    Well my dreams are dying
    You’ll be multiplying
You’re gonna like your new school

Well it could have been me
    Upon the stage
Yeah it could have been me
If it wasn’t for the chimp in the cage
Oh it could have been me
    Upon the stage
Yeah it could have been me
If it wasn’t for the chimp in the cage
Oh it could have been my
    Upon the stage
    It could have been me
