Race Against Time

This will be my Nine Hundred Ninety Seventh post and I will most likely write one tomorrow trying to catch some of the prompts and then a short one for Linda G. Hill’s ‘Life in progress’ ‘Stream of Consciousness Saturday’.  I am racing against time because I want to write an epic post for my one thousand milestone, before Helen Vahdati’s This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time ‘Song Lyric Sunday’ arrives.  I have been writing about music lately, because I like to find meanings behind the lyrics in songs.  I have already selected my song for Saturday and I started working on my post, and I hope to be able to accomplish this in the time that is left for me.

The Canadian rock band The Guess Who recorded a song titled ‘No Time’.  It was composed by guitarist Randy Bachman and lead singer Burton Cummings, and the song is about moving on and finding your true calling, so it is basically a Dear John letter stating, “No time left for you”.  It is a kiss-off song with no hidden meaning as the lyrics state “Seasons change and so did I”, “you need not wonder why” while the singer is “On my way to better things”, “I found myself some wings”.  The song was inspired by two tracks on the Buffalo Springfield ‘Again’ album which were ‘Rock & Roll Woman’ and ‘Hung Upside Down’.  Neil Young of Buffalo Springfield, also a fellow Canadian played a bootleg version of the album for Cummings and Bachman when his travels took him to Winnipeg.  They heard it, and loved the country-rock sound, so they set out to write something like it.

The song came out on The Guess Who’s ‘Canned Wheat’ album in 1969 and it is one of the band’s most popular songs and their second chart-topper of four.  It peaked at #5, but their biggest hit ‘American Woman/No Sugar Tonight’ went all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts.  In 1992, Burton Cummings joined the All-Starr Band that Ringo Starr put together.  Other musicians included Joe Walsh of the Eagles and James Gang, Nils Lofgren from the E Street Band, Todd Rundgren who played with Nazz, Utopia and The New Cars, Dave Edmunds from the groups Rockpile and Love Sculpture, Timothy B. Schmit of Poco and the Eagles, drummer Zak Starkey and multi-instrumentalist Timmy Cappello.

On my way to better things
(No time left for you) I found myself some wings
(No time left for you) Distant roads are callin’ me
(No time left for you)

Time, time, time, time, time

No time for a gentle rain
No time for my watch and chain
No time for revolving doors
No time for the killin’ floor
No time for the killin’ floor
There’s no time left for you
No time left for you

On my way to better things
(No time left for you) I found myself some wings
(No time left for you) Distant roads are callin’ me
(No time left for you)

No time for a summer friend
No time for the love you send
Seasons change and so did I
You need not wonder why
You need not wonder why
There’s no time left for you
No time left for you

On my way to better things
(No time…

On my way to better things
(No time left for you) I found myself some wings
(No time left for you) Distant roads are callin’ me
(No time left for you)

No time for a summer friend
No time for the love you send
Seasons change and so did I
You need not wonder why
You need not wonder why
There’s no time left for you
No time left for you

No time, no time, no time, no time
No no no time, no no time, no time, no time
I got, got, got, got no time
I got, got, got, got no time for you, woman
I got no time for you, woman
I got no time for your stupid games anymore
No, no
I got no time for you, woman, no
I got no time for hangin’ around
For gettin’ stepped on
For gettin’ pushed around, woman
I got no time for hangin’ around them kind of things

  1. Those were both fun to listen to; great guitar song! [I also like American Woman a lot — and makes sense it was Canadian.] I’d never heard that Guess Who beginning.

  2. I thought you covered the race against time so very well Jim…thanks for your thoughts, I think to win against time its important to be a stayer rather than a sprinter. Good luck with your epic post.

  3. Congrats on almost reaching 1,000 posts. That’s big! I’m looking forward to your epic celebratory posts. And Guess Who was another group I really liked. Burton Cummings had such a distinctive voice. Great song choice.
