Thursday Inspiration #204 Darlin’ Be Home Soon

Respond to this challenge, by either using the prompt word home, or going with the above picture, or by means of the song ‘Darlin’ Be Home Soon’, or by going with another song by The Lovin’ Spoonful, or anything else that you think fits.  ‘Darlin’ Be Home Soon’ was written by John Sebastian of the Lovin’ Spoonful for the soundtrack of the 1966 Francis Ford Coppola film You’re a Big Boy Now.  It appeared on the Lovin’ Spoonful’s 1967 soundtrack album You’re a Big Boy Now, which was their second soundtrack album released a year after What’s Up, Tiger Lily?  It was also released as a single, reaching #15 on the US pop charts and it made it to #44 in the UK.  Sebastian performed this composition at Woodstock, being the fourth song out of the five that he performed at the 1969 music festival.  In 1966, Canadian lead guitarist and singer Zal Yanovsky and Spoonful bassist Steve Boone were arrested in San Francisco for marijuana possession, and although charges were dropped after the pair turned in their dealer, the incident proved the beginning of the end for the band.  Yanovsky left the group in mid-1967 and Sebastian quit months later.

Sebastian was asked to write this specific song for an important love scene.  He started thinking about all the songs that dealt with lonely musicians on the road and decided to flip the concept and write about a guy waiting for his girlfriend to come home.  In this song, he pleas for a partner to spend a few minutes talking before leaving.  ‘Darlin’ Be Home Soon’ has been described as being one of the most heartfelt songs about being away from a loved one, written from the point of view of a musician on the road writing a letter.  The singer reflects on the fact that a quarter of his life has almost passed and although he has learned many things, his life ids filled with confusion.  He is in a romantic relationship that means everything to him, but his significant other is going on a trip and this is making him miserable, because time spent without her is more confusing.  This song examines how wonderful it is to finally find someone that you are able to connect with.  The Lovin’ Spoonful recorded this with a studio orchestra in just one day.

Come
And talk of all the things we did today
Here
And laugh about our funny little ways
While we have a few minutes to breathe
Then I know that it’s time you must leave
But, darling, be home soon
