NY riot cops suspended after shoving man, 75, to the ground and leaving him bleeding and unconscious. President Trump suggested without evidence Tuesday morning that an elderly man who was hospitalized after being shoved to the ground by police in Buffalo, New York, was an “ANTIFA provocateur” who may have been trying to “set up” law enforcement.

And now a city in Florida has offered to hire any cops dismissed for misconduct. https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/08/us/brevard-county-florida-police-union-misconduct-trnd/index.html?fbclid=IwAR2f-tmu5XNd0NNMca03XB2U6NemsYrWKd1hIS2Ql6wz_joZfnRn-8q27pc

Yes I read about that and there is some legislation going through Congress that might address this.

What kind of legislation, Jim? If a cop brutalizes citizens and is fired, they are banned from being hired by another law enforcement agency? I hope that’s what you mean.

The George Floyd protests have breathed new life into a movement to end a legal doctrine called “qualified immunity” which limits lawsuits against police. A bill is in the House now that would make it easier to sue police officers and other government officials for violating people’s civil rights was introduced by two lawmakers Thursday.

GOOD. Thanks for the update. Qualified immunity sounds like hogwash. License to kill.

This incident just highlights the problem, kill first and (there isn’t a next step).

As I understand it, there were many more incidents of cops behaving brutally for no reason during the protests (not talking about rioters, looters, arsonists), just to bully and intimidate folks who were exercising their constitutional rights. We need to hold them accountable!

I think the police are feeling emboldened by Trump and his twisted sense of reality.

I hope that mangy MOFO rots in hell. Nobody gets away with this kind of bad karma generation. The cop AND the MOFO making excuses for what was videotaped here.

Martin Gugino is that poor man’s name and as of last report I could find, 2 days back, still hopitalized with head injuries. But getting info on that is difficult, the press doesn’t seem too interested in his case.
I believe Mr Trump also said he was waving a secret scanner (or invisible wand of some such bs) that was going to shut down the police communications system. I don’t know what’s worse – thinking that he actually believes such things, or thinking that he knows it’s a crock but still tweets them anyway.

That is a very good point Dave, but the worst thing is that he is still in power and many of his followers actually believe everything that he says,

Mr. Gugino is still hospitalized but out of intensive care. He has a skull fracture, so healing will be slow. He is a well-known peace and justice advocate in Buffalo and a member of the Catholic Workers, who live lives of poverty in solidarity and service to others. I don’t live in the Buffalo area, but I am in upstate NY, so I think we are getting more updates. Governor Cuomo has also spoken about Mr. Gugino several times in his daily press briefings.

It’s hard to comment on because it’s so ugly. I’ve seen horrible images and a few positive ones like Hugh Jackman posted. They need new policies and get the bad ones out…but the word “defund” I’m not in favor of.

Especially with no plan on how that is going to be done.

Jim the plans I read are… “first responders should be mental health providers, social workers, victim advocates and other community members in less visible roles.”

That makes sense.

It depends on what is going on. In some things yea I agree with it but if I’m getting chased with a man with a knife I want a cop.
It would be good to restructure but not do away with them…at least to me anyway.

I agree with Max on the police issue. “Defunding” is not the way to go because A) the term itself will drive a lot of middle of the road types to the Republicans and B) we need police . Social workers and mental health medics are good to have but we need people to go after the armed robbers, the rapists, the gang-bangers etc. What we need is better police – at least in some areas. An NYPD cop whose dad was also a cop wrote an op-ed in USA Today and he suggested they need to take a 2 year college course, which would involve courses on law, constitutional rights, mental health etc as well as the weapons training they currently take. That seems smart to me, and I think we need national standards for hiring . Pay them more if need be but make the qualifications higher.

I agree with you and Max, as police are necessary as long as bad guys exist. We don’t need any bad police, and we need to weed out the bad ones that we have. Along with the courses that you mentioned, there needs to be some racial sensitivity training, as many cops are bigots that harass blacks. I knew a cop that hated blacks and police should be responsible for protecting all of the people.
