It is possible that the first notion of an out of body experience, or astral projection originated when man began thinking about how he could continue living even after death.  This curiosity about what comes next motivated people to explore more widely beyond their limits and to think about the eternal life, and about being something that exists somewhere, but is hidden from our eyes, while we are in this physical world.  The ancient Greeks used temple magic, letting heavy doors open by themselves via secret systems of pulleys, wheels, ropes and reservoirs and employing hidden tubes and secret passages to make the oracle Sibyl whisper through the walls.

Charles Darwin was an anxious amateur biologist who held off publishing his theory of evolution by natural selection for years, because he feared that it would disturb the religious and social values of his time.  The Victorian period was also the golden age of belief in supernatural forces and energies, ghost stories, weird transmissions and spooky phenomena with science being pitted against religion.  As scientific and technological advances were taking place, this  encouraged a kind of magical thinking that was accompanied by the dark shadow of the occult.  For every disenchantment, there was a fascination about the changing world.  The advances in science were so rapid, the natural and the supernatural often became blurred in popular thinking, at least for a time.  In the 1830s and 1840s, there was a craze for Mesmerism, in which miraculous medical cures could be affected by manipulating the invisible flows of ‘animal magnetism’ that passed through and between bodies.  The great magician Houdini wanted to communicate with his dead mother and he ended up debunking psychics who tried to trick him with fake supernatural occurrences.  As far as cereal goes, Lucky Charms are magically delicious and Trix are for kids.

Thus the theme for Song Lyric Sunday is Haunted/Magic/Mystery/Supernatural/Trick for this week.  I think that everyone will be able to work with this prompt and find something.  Try to find a song that fits the prompt, then write your post and please be patient, and wait for me to approve your pingbacks, or you can just place your link in the comments section.
