What Up

Did anyone know that in 1987, the month of March was designated as Women’s History Month?  I guess this makes today the last day where all the ladies who participate in Song Lyric Sunday can rock it out with their songs.  On March 31, in 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach was born.  In 1949, the 45 rpm single record was first introduced by RCA Victor.  In 1958, Chuck Berry released ‘Johnny B. Goode’.  In 1967, Jimi Hendrix burned his guitar for the 1st time at the Astoria in London.  In 1969, George Harrison & Patti Boyd are fined £250 each for illegal drugs.

Where some hear raging delirium, others hear music. Rock ‘n’ Roll has seen it better days, but the idea that Rock ‘n’ Roll is dead is something that being perpetuated by people who really don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.  Rock ‘n’ roll became a new art form that emerged with the deepened expansion of the American spirit and it is not only still kicking, it’s thriving.  Many people credit ‘Rocket 88’, which was recorded in 1951 by Ike Turner and his band as being the first Rock ‘n’ Roll song, thus making this genre of music 68 years old, which is just two years older than I am.  The recording was credited to Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, who were actually Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm.  Rock music may die someday, but not until all the people with rock in their hearts die.

This week the prompt is Record/Juke Box/DJ/Radio.  Thomas Edison’s favorite invention was the phonograph, a music machine that played music from a wax cylinder.  While he was working on improvements to the telegraph and the telephone, Edison created a machine with two needles, one for recording and one for playback.  In 1890, Louis Glass and William S. Arnold invented the nickel-in-the-slot phonograph, the first of which was an Edison Class M Electric Phonograph retrofitted with a device patented under the name of Coin Actuated Attachment for Phonograph.  The term “jukebox” came into use in the United States around 1940, derived from the familiar usage “juke joint“, derived from the Gullah word (creolized language) “juke” or “joog” meaning disorderly, rowdy, or wicked.  The inventor of the radio is a much longer story, but essentially in 1943, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Tesla’s patent making him the inventor of the radio, although, many people still tend to think of Marconi as the father of the radio.  In 1906, the brilliant Canadian inventor, Reginald Aubrey Fessenden, who is generally ignored and largely unknown made the first radio broadcast for entertainment, so he could be considered the first DJ.  The term disc jockey wasn’t coined until the 1930’s.  The World’s first DJ dance party was thrown by Jimmy Savile in 1943, who played jazz records for his guests.  A few years later, Savile became the first man to use turntables to keep the music in continuous play.
