New wave is another unruly term that doesn’t seem to abide by a specific set of rules. New wave music was a distinct style of pop-adjacent music that arose during the 1970s and 80s, that was lighthearted or funny, with superfast rhythms and a reliance on electronic components. A lot of it featured twangy guitars, synths, and staccato vocals and New Wave bands used elaborate studio technology like flanging, delay, synthesizers, drum machines and early digital samplers. The sense of futurism extended to the lyrics, which often drew from science fiction themes. New wave culture and fashion was flamboyant and over-the-top, featuring exaggerated Caucasian dance styles and clothing, that emerged from punk rock. New Wave music took its name from the French New Wave cinema of the late 1950s, this catchall classification was defined in opposition to punk (which was generally more raw, rough edged, and political) and to mainstream corporate rock. The basic principle behind new wave was that anyone could start a band, but the new wave artists were influenced by the lighter side of 1960s pop music and 1950s fashion, were more commercially viable than their abrasive counterparts.
Last week we had What Is Country where the theme was to find Country Music songs. This week the theme is to find New Wave Music. Take some time to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this music challenge, and even better, read as many of them as you can as you will probably find many enjoyable songs and it is quite possibly that you will learn a thing or two. Share your music with others and post a video, try do some research and let everyone know something about the song that you post. Tell everyone why you like the song, whether it was a hit, or what you think the song is about. Show the lyrics, let’s all listen to our favorite songs and explore some new music. Try to find a song that fits the theme, then write your post and create a pingback, or you can just place your link in the comments section.
Suggestions
• Try to use the prompt words or at least conform to a general theme, as you see it. If the song you select does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• It would be good if you could post the lyrics to the song of your choice, as this is helpful for the people that want to follow along with the music.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due. It would also be a good idea to give credit to the singer and the band associated with your song.
• Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be, but please try not to include too many videos as that just makes it take longer to look at all of the other posts.
• Link to the YouTube video, or you can pull it into your post, so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.
This week I will be writing about The Psychedelic Furs song ‘Love My Way’, and next week, I will be writing about the song ‘What a Fool Believes’ by The Doobie Brothers. The upcoming prompts will be:
February 5, 2023 – Yacht Rock suggested by John Holton
February 12, 2023 – Sunshine Pop suggested by John Holton
February 19, 2023 – Bubblegum Pop suggested by John Holton
February 26, 2023 – Swamp Rock
I would have had so many to choose from this week, but on hearing the passing of Television’s front man man and guitarist Tom Verlaine today at age 73, I had only one choice.
I bought the 12″ single as well as the the Marquee Moon album which is one of my all-time favourites.
I remember
Ooh, how the darkness doubled
I recall
Lightning struck itself
I was listening
Listening to the rain
I was hearing
Hearing something else
Life in the hive puckered up my night
A kiss of death, the embrace of life
Ooh, there I stand neath the Marquee Moon
Just waiting
I spoke to a man
Down at the tracks
And I ask him
How he don’t go mad
He said, “look here, junior, don’t you be so happy
And for heaven’s sake, don’t you be so sad”
Life in the hive puckered up my night
The kiss of death, the embrace of life
Ooh, there I stand ‘neath the Marquee Moon
Hesitating
Well, the Cadillac
It pulled out of the graveyard
Pulled up to me
All they said, “get in, get in”
Then the Cadillac
It puttered back into the graveyard
Me, I got out again
Life in the hive puckered up my night
A kiss of death, the embrace of life
Ooh, there I stand neath the Marquee Moon
But I ain’t waiting, uh-uh
I remember
How the darkness doubled
I recall
Lightning struck itself
I was listening
Listening to the rain
I was hearing
Hearing something else

I am sorry to hear the sad news, and this is a good tribute to Tom Verlaine. Thanks for joining in with your music Glyn.
