Out Of My Head

The romantic musical comedy Grease gave us Sandy who was played by Olivia Newton-John, and from this we got the acclaimed song ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’.  This song was released on the 1978 Grease Soundtrack album and the single went to #2 in the UK and it reached #3 in the US.  The song was sung in the film right after John Travolta’s character, Danny Zuko, downplayed his feelings for Sandy.  They met on the beach before their Senior year in High School, but now that school has started up again, Danny has a reputation to keep up, so he can’t be seen falling in love with just one chick.  Sandy starts hanging out with Rizzo and the Pink Ladies who compare her to Sandra Dee because of her good girl image.  Fortunately for Sandy, her new friends invite her to a sleepover, where Sandy realized that despite Danny’s rudeness, she couldn’t shake her feelings for him.  Sandy was an Australian girl that wanted to get the bad boy and she is oozing with confidence and sensuality, as she seems like she is ready and willing to go all the way with Danny.  ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ was added at the last minute in this film as it wasn’t originally in Grease.  The song was recorded and filmed after the movie was made, because Newton-John’s contract stipulated that she needed to have one solo performance in the film, so the producers had to make this last-minute addition.  Olivia Newton-John’s longtime producer John Farrar wrote this ballad, and it was the only song from the soundtrack to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Music – Original Song at the 51st Academy Awards.

Being in love is when you yearn for a person, and you think about them constantly, craving to be around them and wanting to spend all of your time together.  Devotion is an essential virtue in romantic relationship, but love and romantic devotion should not be blind, so no one should be hopelessly devoted to another.  A person who has fallen hopelessly in love with another will have a hard time focusing on anything else.  They are being ruled by their emotions, so most of the time they will be freaking out, because they are not thinking clearly or calmly.  Having a new love may be the most exciting thing in the world, but it can easily put you in a state of panic if you don’t hear from your romantic partner and you allow yourself to assume that it’s because they don’t like you anymore.  You could become a total mess with your head telling you something and your heart telling you the opposite.  When a person is not making logical decisions, others will view then as acting crazy.

Sandy’s undying affection for Danny created this beautiful, tortured song, as her as a summer fling has now turned into a soul mate situation.  Sandy has blossomed from being a pristine girl into a passionate woman and soon she will transform into a cigarette-smoking, leather-clad badass, who you just have to love.

Guess mine is not the first heart broken
My eyes are not the first to cry
I’m not the first to know
There’s just no getting over you

I know I’m just a fool who’s willing
To sit around and wait for you
But baby, can’t you see there’s nothing else for me to do?
I’m hopelessly devoted to you

But now there’s nowhere to hide
Since you pushed my love aside
I’m out of my head
Hopelessly devoted to you

Hopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to you

My head is sayin’, “Fool, forget him”
My heart is sayin’, “Don’t let go
Hold on to the end”, that’s what I intend to do
I’m hopelessly devoted to you

But now there’s no way to hide
Since you pushed my love aside
I’m outta my head
Hopelessly devoted to you

Hopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to you

Written for Song Lyric Sunday where the theme is Australian music.
