Thursday Inspiration #175 Let Me Roll It

Respond to this challenge, by either by using the prompt word roll, or going with the above picture, or by means of the song ‘Let Me Roll It’, or by going with another song by Paul McCartney and Wings, or anything else that you think fits.  ‘Let Me Roll’ It was written by Paul and Linda McCartney, and it was released on the Paul McCartney and Wings 1973 third studio album Band on the Run.  The song was also released as the B-side to ‘Jet’ in early 1974, which peaked at #7 on both the UK Singles chart and the Billboard Hot 100, and it is thought to be one of McCartney’s best songs.  The title of this song was inspired by a line in the song ‘I’d Have You Anytime’ that was written by Bob Dylan and George Harrison and released on the All Things Must Pass album that says, “Let me roll it to you.”

Paul McCartney sang lead and backing vocals, and played bass, drums, and electric guitar, Linda McCartney sang backing vocals, and played organ and Denny Laine sang backing vocals, and played electric guitar on this song.  At the time when this was written there was a tiff or a petty quarrel going on between Paul McCartney and John Lennon and since John had used an echo effect on ‘Instant Karma’ and ‘Cold Turkey’ from his John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album that was released in 1970, some critics were accusing Paul of copying John’s style.  Although the song had similarities to Lennon’s debut solo album, because of the use of echo, heavy bass and stinging lead guitar, these resemblances are thought to be coincidental.  This song is probably a drug song, and it is most likely about rolling a joint, but Paul also wanted this song to send a message to John that they should be friends and smoke some weed together.  I guess Paul was going to get the marijuana and roll it up for them to party together.

You gave me something
I understand
You gave me loving in the palm of my hand

I can’t tell you how I feel
My heart is like a wheel
Let me roll it

  1. I love this song…it does remind me of John. I never could smoke anything including cigarettes or pot…now a gummy I wouldn’t turn down lol.
Sorry I’m behind Jim…a mentor of mine just passed away and I haven’t been consistent on my comments.
