We’ll Be Lovers Once Again

‘Bright Side of the Road’ was written by Van Morrison and included on his 1979 11th studio album Into the Music.  It was released as a single and it charted at #48 in the Netherlands, #63 in the UK, but it didn’t make it to the Billboard Hot 100 as it peaked at #119 in the US.  In 2020, the song reached its highest radio airplay chart position in Ireland, peaking at #2.  Van Morrison’s song ‘Bright Side of the Road’ includes the lyrics, “From the dark end of the street, to the bright side of the road”, which many people believe was influenced by the song ‘The Dark End of the Street’ which was a soul song written in 1967, by Dan Penn and Chips Moman and first recorded by James Carr.  Van may even have written this song as a tribute to the Carr song, and these cheerfully optimistic could be used to cancel out the dark meaning of the original song ‘The Dark End of the Street’.

This song is about making things better for these lovers, as they come out of the dark and move into the light.  The man realizes that life goes by quickly and all they have is each other between the time they are born till when they die, so he wants to enjoy what they have.  The lyrics are a bit repetitive, but the music is very upbeat.  The personnel on this track were Van Morrison on vocals, guitar, and harmonica, with Herbie Armstrong on guitar, Pee Wee Ellis on tenor saxophone, David Hayes playing bass guitar, Zakir Hussain on tabla, Mark Isham on trumpet, Mark Jordan on piano, Katie Kissoon singing backing vocals, Toni Marcus on violin and Peter Van Hooke on drums.  ‘Bright Side of the Road’ has been covered by many artists over the years, but the only group that I know that played this song was the Jerry Garcia Band.

From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road
We’ll be lovers once again
On the bright side of the road

Little darlin’, come with me
Help me share my load
From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road

Into this life we’re born
Maybe sometimes we don’t know why
And time seems to go by so fast
In the twinkling of an eye

Let’s enjoy it while we can
Help me share my load
From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road

From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road
We’ll be lovers once again
On the bright side of the road

Little darlin’, come with me
Help me share my load
From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road

Into this life we’re born
Sometimes we don’t know why
And time goes by so fast
In the twinkling of an eye

Let’s enjoy it while we can
Help me share my load
Little darling, come with me
To the bright side of the road

From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road
We’ll be lovers once again
On the bright side of the road

Little darling come with me
Help me sing my song
From the dark end of the street
To the bright side of the road

Little darling come with me
To the bright side of the road
Little darling come with me
To the bright side of the road
We’ll be lovers once again
On the bright side of the road
