Looking to the Sky

‘Learn to Fly’ was released on the Foo Fighters 1999 third studio album There Is Nothing Left To Lose and the single went to #21 in the UK, and it climbed up to #13 in the US.  The Foo Fighters took their name from a term used by World War II pilots, and they have their own private jet.  The Foo Fighters were named after a string of unexplained aerial sightings by both Allied and enemy forces during WWII toward the end of World War 2.  Mission updates from the 415th Night Fighter Squadron began reporting inexplicable lights following their aircraft along with details of dogfights over the German-occupied Rhine Valley.  After Kurt Cobain’s death in April of 1994, then Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl started working on a solo musical endeavor, mostly songs that he wrote that never made it to any of the Nirvana albums.  Dave said that he was trying to figure out his life when he picked up a hitchhiker who was wearing a Kurt Cobain T-shirt and he thought, “Even in this remote place I can’t outrun life.”  So, he went home and started over with the Foo Fighters, as a way to survive and get on with his life.

While Grohl was still in Nirvana, he issued an album of demos, Pocketwatch, under the pseudonym Late! in 1992.  The Foo Fighters are an American rock band formed in Seattle in 1994 with Dave Grohl as the only official member of the band on their 1995 debut album Foo Fighters.  Grohl formed a band to support this album recruiting bassist Nate Mendel, drummer William Goldsmith, and guitarist Pat Smea.  On the album There Is Nothing Left To Lose, the band consisted of the trio of Grohl, Mendel, and drummer Taylor Hawkins.  ‘Learn to Fly’ was the band’s first song to enter the Billboard Hot 100, as well as their second-highest charting song on the Hot 100.  I wasn’t able to make much sense out of the lyrics for ‘Learn to Fly’, but Grohl said that it is about wanting to be a pilot, and at this time Dave Grohl wanted to become a pilot.  Most of the information written about this song deals with the video which features Jack Black and his Tenacious D partner, Kyle Gass who are airline attendants that mistakenly spike the coffee.  Dave Grohl was previously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 with Nirvana, along with Taylor Hawkins, Rami Jaffee, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, and Pat Smear.  The Foo Fighters were inducted in 2021.

Run and tell all of the angels
This could take all night
Think I need a devil to help me
Get things right

Hook me up a new revolution
‘Cause this one is a lie
We sat around laughing
And watch the last one die

I’m looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something help me burn out bright

I’m looking for a complication
Looking ‘cause I’m tired of trying
Make my way back home
When I learn to fly (high)

Think I’m done nursing the patience
I can wait one night
I’d give it all away
If you give me one last try

We live happily ever trapped
If you just save my life
Run and tell the angels
That everything is all right

I’m looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something help me burn out bright

I’m looking for a complication
Looking ‘cause I’m tired of trying
Make my way back home
When I learn to fly (high)
Make my way back home
When I learn to fly

Fly along with me
I can’t quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own
Fly along with me
I can’t quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own

I’m looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something help me burn out bright

I’m looking for a complication
Looking ‘cause I’m tired of trying
Make my way back home
When I learn to

Looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something help me burn out bright

I’m looking for a complication
Looking ‘cause I’m tired of trying
Make my way back home
When I learn to fly high
Make my way back home
When I learn to fly
Make my way back home
When I learn to
