If I Could Find a Way

Cher recorded ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ in 1989, for the lead single on her nineteenth studio album Heart of Stone.  It charted #6 in the UK and reached #3 in the US and it went on to become her first multimillion seller.  The song was written especially for Cher by Diane Warren, who produced it with Guy Roche.  Cher initially disliked the track after listening to a demo tape sung by Warren, but subsequently changed her opinion after Warren convinced her to record it.  Diane Warren said she had to force Cher to sing it, holding her leg down, telling her that she had to record it.  Cher supposedly responded, “F— you, bitch!  You’re hurting my leg!  OK, I’ll try it.”  Once Cher recorded the tune, she knew that Diane was right.  This song was seen as a major comeback for Cher in the late 1980s, becoming Cher’s second consecutive solo #1 hit on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart.

Cher is singing about regrets that she has over some of the mistakes she made, as she is expressing feelings of remorse.  She wants another shot and she feels that if she could turn back time, that her lover would no longer be hurt and then he would stay with her.  She said some hurtful things to this person, using her words like weapons, to make him cry.  Cher says that she did not mean to hurt him, but her pride made her look for flaws and when she found them, she used this to cut him deeply.  She realizes how much pain she has caused and she would like to take back her harmful words.  Her actions caused her significant other to leave and she now regrets that she is alone.  Nobody can reverse time, right all their wrongs and have someone love them again, when you treat them like crap.  Cher would love to win back the love she lost and she says that she is willing to do whatever it takes.

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that’ve hurt you and you’d stay

I don’t know why I did the things I did
I don’t know why I said the things I said
Pride’s like a knife, it can cut deep inside
Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes

I didn’t really mean to hurt you
I didn’t wanna see you go
I know I made you cry, but baby

[Chorus]
If I could turn back time, if I could find a way
I’d take back those words that’ve hurt you, you’d stay
If I could reach the stars, I’d give ‘em all to you
Then you’d love me, love me, like you used to do
If I could turn back time

My world was shattered, I was torn apart
Like someone took a knife and drove it deep in my heart
When you walked out that door I swore that I didn’t care
But I lost everything, darlin’, then and there

Too strong to tell you I was sorry
Too proud to tell you I was wrong
I know that I was blind and darlin’

If I could turn back time, if I could find a way
I’d take back those words that’ve hurt you and you’d stay
If I could reach the stars, I’d give ‘em all to you
Then you’d love me, love me, like you used to do

If I could turn back time
(If I could turn back time)
If I could turn back time
(If I could turn back time)
If I could turn back time
Oh, baby

I didn’t really mean to hurt you
I didn’t wanna see you go
I know I made you cry, but

If I could turn back time, if I could find a way
I’d take back those words that hurt you
If I could reach the stars, I’d give ‘em all to you
Then you’d love me, love me, like you used to do
If I could turn back time, if I could find a way
And maybe, maybe, maybe you’d stay
If I could reach the stars

    1. Cher does three sets of 25 of an exercise that she calls the fire hydrant. She gets down on all fours and puts her leg up to make an L with her other leg and that is the secret to her incredible looking butt.

  1. She did this in a concert on an aircraft carrier in SF, IIRC. The sailors were so turned on by the performance they went into town and rioted. The Navy has said there will never be a carrier concert again.
