2. Which musical instrument did Karen Carpenter play?
She was a drummer, and she joined her high school marching band to get out of gym class.  Karen got some drum lessons from Hal Blaine.

3. Carl Wilson, of which legendary band, died in 1998?
Carl was in the Beach Boys and he slept with Mike Love’s wife who was his cousin.  Carl was a draft dodger.  Carl played lead guitar and sang with the group for more than three decades.  He died of cancer at the age of 51.

4. The Rose was a Bette Midler movie based on the life of which singer?
The movie was originally titled “Pearl”, which was a biographical movie based on Janis Joplin’s life, but Bette Midler thought that not enough time had passed for her to portray Janis, so the title was changed to The Rose.

5. Which late great duetted with k.d. Lang on his hit ‘Crying’?
Roy Orbison wrote Crying with Joe Melson.

6. How is Mary O’Brien who died in March 1999 better known?
Mary O’Brien is better known as Dusty Springfield and she died on March 2, 1999 at the age of 59.

7. Whose life story was recreated in the biopic “Sweet Dreams”?
Sweet Dreams is a 1985 film which tells the story of Patsy Cline.

8. Florence Ballard was a member of which group?
Florence Ballard was a founding member of the Supremes, and she sang on 16 top 40 singles with the group, including ten number-one hits.

9. Whose farewell note in 1995 read, “It’s better to burn out than fade away”?
Kurt Cobain of Nirvana wrote this on his suicide note.  He also wrote, “I have it good, very good, and I’m grateful, but since the age of seven, I’ve become hateful towards all humans in general…. Thank you all from the pit of my burning, nauseous stomach for your letters and concern during the past years. I’m too much of an erratic, moody baby!

10. Which Marvin Gaye hit got into the top ten again after his murder?

  1. My goodness! I’m more in awe of your musical knowledge than I was before, and that’s saying something! Great info on these very accurate answers. AND you educated me on Jerry Garcia a bit more. I was under the impression he had been with the “Dead the whole time. Fascinating. However to keep you humble, you got one of them wrong (according to Glyn). I bow to both your superior knowledge of your subject and suggest if it’s an issue that you let him know. Answers will be posted on Tuesday of next week. 🙂 Thanks Jim for a superb post!

  2. I didn’t realize Garcia was in that many configurations… that was the first time I’ve seen Karen do any solo…she was really jazzy…and good.
