Thursday Inspiration #148 Looks Like We Made It

Respond to this challenge, by either by using the prompt word made, or going with the above picture, or by means of the song ‘Looks Like We Made It’, or by going with another song by Barry Manilow, or anything else that you think fits.  ‘Looks Like We Made It’ was released on Barry Manilow’s, 1976 fourth studio album, This One’s for You.  Grammy and Academy Award winning songwriter Will Jennings teamed up with composer Richard Kerr to write the lyrics for Barry Manilow’s 1977 #1 hit in the US ‘Looks Like We Made It’.

This song is about a guy who walks into a party and sees someone that he used to be with there.  The former couple are each with someone else, because they left each other on the way to find another love, and the guy is wondering if they actually made it.  He thought that his new relationship was successful, until he ran into his ex, and these old feelings started stirring again.  These memories of how good they were together come flooding back to him.  They are so strong that he can still taste them, and he would like to hold her again.  She seems to be everywhere in his mind, but perhaps neither one of them made it, as letting go of somebody is not the formula for success.

Jennings had another hit with Manilow in 1978 with the song ‘Somewhere in the Night’.  He worked with Steve Winwood on ‘Higher Love’ which led to a 1986 Grammy nomination.  Jennings also wrote the words for Eric Clapton’s ‘Tears in Heaven’ and he shared a Grammy for Song of the Year in 1993 for that.  He earned his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for ‘People Alone’ from 1980 romance The Competition where six pianists compete in San Francisco for a $20,000 first prize.  Will Jennings took home the statue for ‘Up Where We Belong’ from the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman.  Jennings collaborated with James Horner on James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic which yielded the hit love theme ‘My Heart Will Go On’, that was recorded by Celine Dion.

And all I could taste was love the way we made it
Love’s so strange, playin’ hide and seek with hearts and always hurtin’
We’re the fools standin’ close enough to touch those burnin’ memories
And if I hold you for the sake of all those times love made us lose our minds
Could I ever let you go?
Whoa, no, we made it
