Hole In My Heart

‘If You Want My Love’ was written by guitarist Rick Nielsen and released by Cheap Trick in 1982 on their sixth studio album One on One.  It reached #11 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart, went to #45 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and it made it to #29 in the UK.  A lot of people consider this song to be very Beatlesque, saying that the song’s middle eight is similar to that of The Beatles’ ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’.  A middle 8 is a brief passage in a song, that provides a departure from the regular alternation of verse and chorus sections.  Obviously, it occurs towards the middle of the song, is traditionally eight bars in length although that is not necessary, and is in a different tempo, melody, or sometimes a different key than the rest of the song.  This is incorporated to break away from the simple repetition structure of the two-repeating verse/chorus sections, by introducing new elements into the song and it is often referred to as the bridge, or the break.  This dynamic contrast being neither the verse or the chorus gives the song a different feel.

In 1967, Rick Nielsen formed Fuse with Tom Petersson and they released one album before they dissolved.  When Brad Carlson, who used the stage name Bun E. Carlos joined on drums, Fuse moved to Philadelphia in 1971.  Randy Hogan, also known as Xeno, was their original lead singer, but he left the band shortly after its formation to join Straight Up and when they returned from a 1973 European tour back to Illinois, they added folk singer Robin Zander.  The band adopted the name Cheap Trick after attending a Slade concert, where Petersson commented that the band used “every cheap trick in the book” as part of their act.  Cheap Trick started performing at bowling allies and small concert venues around the band’s hometown of Rockford, Illinois.  In 1980, Petersson left the band, and Pete Comita initially replaced him on bass and later John Brant took that spot.  In 1987, Petersson rejoined the Cheap Trick fold.  In 2010, after Carlos had stopped recording and touring with Cheap Trick, he was replaced by Rick Nielsen’s son, Daxx.

Cheap Trick has performed live more than 5,000 times and sold more than 20 million albums.  Over the course of its career, the band has experienced several resurgences of popularity and built a dedicated cult following.  Cheap Trick were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and VH-1 ranked them 25th on the list of 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.  I think this song is about a guy who is ready to take things to the next level with his girl, and he is making the first move by telling her that she can have his love.  He is lonely and he doesn’t think that she has noticed him yet, but he is done hiding, even though he feels that she is way more attractive than he is.  If he doesn’t make the first move, nothing will ever happen between them, and he just can’t fight the way he feels about her anymore.

Ah
Ah

If you want my love you got it
When you need my love you got it
I won’t hide it
I won’t throw your love away, ooh

If you want my love you got it
When you need my love you got it
I won’t hide it
I won’t throw your love away, ooh

Yes, I thought you were a mystery girl
A special girl in this crazy old world
You couldn’t see me when I laid eyes on you

Lonely is only a place
You don’t know what it’s like
You can’t fight it
It’s a hole in my heart, in my heart

If you want my love you got it
When you need my love you got it
I won’t hide it
I won’t throw your love away, ooh

Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah

You hold the secrets of love in this world
I’m hypnotized by your every word
A special face, a special voice
A special smile in my life

‘Cause lonely is only a place
You don’t know what it’s like
You can’t fight it
It’s a hole in my heart, in my heart

If you want my love you got it
When you need my love you got it
I won’t hide it
I won’t throw your love away, ooh

If you want my love you got it
When you need my love you got it
I won’t hide it
I won’t throw your love away, ooh

If you want my love you got it
When you need my love you got it
You won’t hide it
You won’t throw your love away, ooh

  1. I always thought they were the hardest-working band in rock. I saw them one time and they were great.
This song…more than any of their others sounds like The Beatles…or the Beatles in the 80s.
