Contractions

My wife was in labor and she suddenly started shouting, “Shouldn’t! Wouldn’t! Couldn’t! Didn’t! Can’t!”  I was concerned, so I asked the doctor what was wrong with her.  The doctor said, “Don’t worry, those are just contractions.”  Contractions make words smaller, by removing some of the letters, and those missing letters are replaced with an apostrophe, however a few contractions, such as gonna (going to) and wanna (want to) that are written without apostrophes.  Contractions shorten our speaking time by allowing us to say words faster, letting us to get to the heart of the matter.  The word “ain’t” is the bastard of all contractions because it is said to be slang and it gets stigmatized for being used by ignorant or low-class people.  Ain’t was first used in place of both “am not” and “are not”, then for “is not”. and later, even for “has not” and “have not.”  Sometimes, a contraction is just the same word with fewer letters, while other times it is made up of multiple words that have been combined into one.

Last week we had The Final Frontier where the theme was to find songs feature lyrics about Space, Planets, or Aliens suggested by Di of pensitivity101.  This week the theme is songs that feature lyrics with the contractions of Can’t, Don’t, Shouldn’t, Won’t.  Take some time to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this music challenge, and even better, read as many of them as you are able to as you will probably find many enjoyable songs and it is quite possibly that you will learn a thing or two.  Share your music with others and post a video, try do some research and let everyone know something about the song that you post.  Tell everyone why you like the song, whether it was a hit, or what you think the song is about.  Show the lyrics, let’s all listen to our favorite songs and explore some new music.  Try to find a song that fits the theme, then write your post and create a pingback, or you can just place your link in the comments section.

Think of these as being suggestions instead of being rules:
• Try to use the prompt words or at least conform to a general theme, as you see it.  If the song you select does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• It would be good if you could post the lyrics to the song of your choice, as this is helpful for the people that want to follow along with the music.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due. It would also be a good idea to give credit to the singer and the band associated with your song.
• Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be, but please try not to include too many videos as that just makes it take longer to look at all of the other posts.
• Link to the YouTube video, or you can pull it into your post, so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.

This week I will be writing about the song ‘I’m So Glad’ by Nehemiah “Skip” James, and next week, I will be writing the Moody Blues song ‘Long Summer Days’.  The upcoming prompts will be:
February 20, 2022 – Automated, Mechanical, Modern, Robotic suggested by Melanie B Cee of Sparks From A Combustible Mind (Trigger warning, this may be difficult or challenging to find something that fits, so if you encounter problems, there’s no need to stress, just go with anything)
February 27, 2022 – Death, Destruction, Pestilence, Famine
March 6, 2022 – Songs that mention a Fruit
March 13, 2022 – Songs that mention a musical instrument

  1. Clever post on contractions. I noticed after awhile that I never use a contraction in a post unless I am quoting someone but I use them all the time in comments. In addition to official rules, I guess we all have our own rules!

  2. This was the first single released by Penetration. Lead singer; Pauline Murray had a certain Patti Smith vibe and they even released a version of her ‘Free Money’ track on Penetration’s ‘Moving Targets’ debut album. This has been over-dubbed on to a live video.

Penetrating voices going thru’ my head
    I haven’t listened to a thing they’ve said
Always there waiting with the answers
    Won’t suffer the consequences
    Torn between the two
    Right or wrong
    There is no answer
Don’t tell me what to do
    Its my choice
    I’ll take it
    I’ll chance it

    Don’t dictate
    Don’t dictate
    To me

Penetrating voices going thru’ my head
    I haven’t listened to a thing they’ve said
Always there waiting with the answers
    Won’t suffer the consequences
    Torn between the two
    Right or wrong
    There is no answer
Don’t tell me what to do
    Its my choice
    I’ll take it
    I’ll chance it

    Don’t dictate etc.
