Thursday Inspiration #137 One Thing Leads To Another

Respond to this challenge, by either by using the prompt word beat, or going with the above picture, or by means of the song ‘One Thing Leads To Another’, or by going with another song by the Fixx, or anything else that you think fits.  This is the best-known song by The Fixx and it was released on their second studio album Reach the Beach in 1983. climbing up the US Billboard Hot 100 chart till it reached #4.  Cy Curnin sings lead vocals, Jamie West-Oram is on lead guitar, Adam Woods on percussion, Alfie Agius on bass and Rupert Greenall played synthesizer and they are all credited with writing this tune.  The Fixx were a new wave group who got played on MTV all the time and this helped them become successful.  This group found the headlines interesting and they didn’t steer clear of political issues.  They formed when the great communicator Ronald Reagan and the Iron Lady Margret Thatcher were having their political marriage, the Cold War was coming to a head, deregulation was in, and credit cards were being thrown at people.  This song deals with malleable politicians who were constantly telling lies and trying to deceive the people.  Most issues are not either black or white and the band members got tired of hearing politicians saying anything just to get them elected.  Carl Jung said, “You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do”, and The Fixx wondered why the politicians don’t “Do what they say, say what you mean”, as they were fed up with the bullshit.

The band originated with the name The Portraits in 1979 when vocalist Cy Curnin and drummer Adam Woods formed the band while in college in London.  Along with keyboardist Rupert Greenall, The Portraits had some minor success, releasing a couple of singles before disbanding late in 1980 and soon reforming as The Fixx with guitarist Jamie West-Oram and bassist Charlie Barrett.  Barrett was replaced by Alfie Agius while the group was on tour, and he began the recording sessions as the group’s bassist, but left the group before the album was completed, so his name was left off of the album.  The group continued with modest success through the late 1980s and into the 1990s but never again reached the commercial heights that they had with this album.

And when one little bump leads to shock miss a beat
You run for cover and there’s heat, why don’t they
Do what they say, say what they mean
One thing leads to another
