What It Is

Blogging originated a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away and when it reached Earth, there was a new hope for mankind.  Sorry as I enjoy teasing, but blogs started out as a natural extension of the increased use of computers and the creation of the earliest forms of the Internet as government military, scientific and academic networks.  The internet existed before the World Wide Web, but it was not open to most people and commercial traffic was forbidden.  The pre-Web Internet was an almost entirely a text-based world where communities of people interacted on these networks and this was mainly used by academics.  Individuals created content for themselves or others and stored that content on computers that were connected to the networks.  Before blogs became popular, these communities often communicated and shared frequently-updated content through community message boards, a forum discussion site where people held conversations in the form of posted messages.  The term “newsgroups” became coined to describe many of these discussion and information-sharing areas, so users could make comments and ask questions in response to the postings.

If you have an internet connection, you can be a blogger and most people do this for their own personal use, while others do it for business purposes.  A blog is an educational, informative, or entertaining website that shares information on a variety of topics and although a podcast can be on a blog, it is an audio file and a blog contains written text, along with visual photos or videos.  A blog post has a much longer life span, than anything that is written on Facebook or tweeted through Twitter, and if it is made publicly accessible, it should generate Readers who will get there through searches.  In social media, a Follower is someone who has subscribed to an account in order to receive all the updates.  Followers and Readers are usually allowed to LIKE posts and also make COMMENTS on them.

I have not met any bloggers who are changing the world, but I have read many interesting posts and if someone was posting their shopping list, I would totally ignore that.  A blog is a place that holds ideas like a newspaper, or a magazine, but it is not distributed in print.  It is a nice tool to share your thoughts and possibly connect with other like-minded people.  I have been blogging for the last 4 and a half years and it hasn’t changed much, but I consider it to be a good way for me to keep out of trouble.

    1. I enjoy reading things that are interesting and although your shopping lists are interesting to you, they don’t do much for me. I do read most of your posts and I consider you to be the hardest working blogger that I know on WordPress.

    1. I like interesting blogs where people put some effort into what they post and there so many that are not worth reading. I like your poetry, even though I some times have trouble understanding poetry, I can see the effort that you exert.

  1. I agree with most of that save longevity of posts. I had several (unfinished) serial novels and a bunch of other crap up on 5 years’ worth of my site and yanked it all. One was so I had the good stuff in isolation so i could work on it and the Romanians would stop downloading my content. We all use our blogs for different things. Mine was an artificial deadline of sorts. I did creative for $ as a career so if I don’t have a wall to throw things against and see how the fare (to me) I get lazy and sloppy.

      1. The “menu”, even though edited, hasn’t caught up with me pulling everything up till a couple of weeks ago. I’m on to WordPress tech about that, but I’ve come to the conclusion that they might not have a clue.

  2. My goal is simple. When I blog about a…lets say song by Badfinger or Big Star…if one person comes along and likes it…My job is done. I don’t try to change the world…I start small…one person at a time.
