Grasping at Straws

This phrase alludes to a person that is drowning and trying to save themselves by grabbing at flimsy reeds.  I thought this phrase was poignant as it seemed like this is what Derek Chauvin’s lawyer was trying to do so he could explain his client’s behavior, but I think he may have grabbed the short straw when he took this case, and this straw ended up being the one that broke Chauvin’s back.
