A Week is a Unit of Time

Monday is the first day of the week and it is followed by Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and then Sunday, when God rested.  This international standard is not followed by the United States and Canada, who both consider Sunday as the start of the week.  The names of these 7 days come from the Roman calendar, which related each day with 7 celestial bodies that were considered to be gods, and the Romans got their knowledge of celestial objects from the Babylonian astrologers.  The Moon became Monday, Mercury developed into Tuesday, Venus converted into Wednesday, Mars became Thursday, Jupiter went on to be Friday, Saturn changed to Saturday and the Sun transformed into Sunday.  Actually, the Roman planet names were only retained for three days, those being Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.  The other days of the week have been replaced by their equivalent Norse or Germanic gods.  Tuesday was named for the one-handed god named Tiw.  Wednesday was named for Odin, Thursday got its name from Thor, who was the god of thunder and Friday got its name from the Norse goddess Freya who is leader of the Valkyries.

Last week we had Information Retained with the prompts being Smart/Stupid.  This week we have the Days of the Week prompts Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday.  Back when Fandango was hosting his Dog Days of August, he had a prompt for Monday and I wrote a post that featured four songs which had Monday in the title and he commented that Days of the Week could be used as a prompt, so this prompt was suggested by Fandango.  Take some time to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this music challenge, as you will probably find many enjoyable songs and it is quite possibly that you will learn a thing or two.  Share your music with others and post a video, try do some research and let everyone know something about the song that you post.  Tell everyone why you like the song, whether it was a hit, or what you think the song is about.  Show the lyrics, let’s all listen to our favorite songs and explore some new music.  Try to find a song that fits the prompt, then write your post and create a pingback, or you can just place your link in the comments section.

Here are the “rules”:
• Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it contains the prompt words or not.  If it does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.

I am writing about the song ‘Mason’s Children’ by the Grateful Dead.  Next week I will be writing about the George Harrison song ‘I Want To Tell You’.  The upcoming prompts will be:
November 15, 2020 – Begin/End/Finish/Start
November 22, 2020 – Fiancé/Husband/Lover/Wife
November 29, 2020 – Bird/Cat/Dog/Fish/Pet
December 6, 2020 – Alligator/Crocodile/Lizard/Snake/Turtle

  1. Tuesday is Mars, Wednesday is Mercury, and Friday is Venus. You get a better idea from the Spanish names (lunes, martes, miercoles, jueves, viernes; sabado and domingo are the Sabbath and the Lord’s day). Just thought I’d mention it…

    1. So far, it is turning out to be a great prompt. Sorry that I made you wait so long, but I had a lot of prompts ready to go before your suggestion. I am actually good on prompts all the way through February 21, 2021.

  2. I did check to see if anybody else posted this one 🙂
An extremely British track. Sadly I couldn’t find a live version or a video.

Saturdays boys live life with insults,
Drink lots of beer and wait for half time results,
Afternoon tea in the light-a-bite, chat up the girls, they
    Dig it!
Saturdays girls work in tescos and woolworths,
Wear cheap perfume cause its all they can afford,
Go to discos they drink baby cham talk to jan, in bingo
    Accents.
Saturdays kids play one arm bandits,
They never win but that’s not the point is it,
Dip in silver paper when their pints go flat,
    How about that, far out!

Their mums and dads smoke capstan non filters,
Wallpaper lives cause they all die of cancer,
What goes on, what goes wrong.

Save up their money for a holiday,
To selsey bill or bracklesham bay,
Think about the future, when they’ll settle down,
Marry the girl next door, with one on the way.

These are the real creatures that time has forgot,
Not given a thought, its the system,
Hate the system, what’s the system?

Saturdays kids live in council houses,
Wear v-necked shirts and baggy trousers,
Drive cortinas fur trimmed dash boards,
Stains on the seats – in the back of course!

  3. Fabulous write up about the days of the week, Jim. I’m having a hard time keeping up these days and will through the holidays, but I eventually get there. I missed most of the entries from last week, but I’m going to go through these. I wanted to do Monday Monday, but it was done and just didn’t have the time to dig. Have a great week! 🙂
