Blog awards do make beginner bloggers feel better, but after you have been around the block a few times, you realize that they serve no purpose other than spreading spam. If I wasn’t so lazy, I would make my blog an award free blog, because I don’t want to receive any more nominations, answer any more stupid questions and have to nominate anyone else. It becomes a chain mail situation of spam after a while, so I refuse to nominate others. So far, I have not refused an award, but I have stopped nominating others, because I don’t like to put a burden on anyone.
Written for Fandango’s Provocative Question #90 which asks, “How do you feel of blog awards? Why do you feel that way?”
I think for new bloggers, they inspire them to continue on. To know someone is reading what you write can help you forge onward. I prefer comments from readers. The engagement with others is a huge part of the blogging experience.

Yes engagement is what makes blogging rewarding for me, thanks for your comment Maggie.

I took the decision very early on to be an award free blog. I’m glad that I did!

Good choice.

I have had to turn down a few and I felt bad but I explained…if I accept one I would have to accept them all.

They have no value, so if you turn down a nomination, you don’t miss anything.

I have never turned on down per se, and I will typically answer the asked questions, but I don’t nominate other bloggers, nor do I pose new questions. And I have designated my blog to be an award-free blog. But I still receive nominations.

Turned *one* down…

That just goes to show that you don’t ever know that other bloggers are actually paying attention to anything that you write.

This is true. You never really know.

It’ not that bad. If you are just starting it is a way to get a bit of exposure. Some of them get a bit on the extreme in terms of what they want you to do. I agree that an established blogger has no use for them.

I am not against them, but I do see awards as being a waste of time. Like you said, they do give newbies exposure and that is a good thing.

It also gets newbies to look around to find recipients for the next allocation — that was how I found a few interesting people/sites.

That is a good point.

I guess I am just a sucker that hates to disappoint others.
