Heads Will Roll

The German Nazis invaded Jersey and the other Channel Islands, and they were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by the Germans during World War II.  Being cutoff from the mainland, the Channel Islands Jersey and Guernsey started issuing occupational stamps in 1941.  In 1979, 13 pence stamps were made of Alice, the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat, from Lewis Carroll’s book.  One of my favorite characters from this book is the Queen of Hearts and I always loved when she said, “Off with their heads!”

The island of Jersey is the southernmost part of Great Britain and this is where St Helier lived.  St Helier was captured by the Saxons, and he was beheaded.  The Saxons used his head as a ball and kicked it around the island, eventually kicking it into the murky depths of the channel.  Since that day, the ghostly figure of a disheveled old man in tattered clothes has been seen near Castle Elizabeth, but Dudley is believed to be the most haunted castle in England.

Dudley Moore married American actress Tuesday Weld in 1975, and then he moved to the U.S.  He played the horny conductor Stanley Tibbets in the 1978 comedy movie Foul Play that starred Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn.  Dudley Moore died on March 27, 2002 in Plainfield, New Jersey, at the age of 66.

Sir Roger Moore, who played James Bond in seven movies married his second wife singer Dorothy Squires in 1952 at a ceremony in New Jersey.

Ham radio operators often say Roger Wilco where Roger means “message received” and Wilco is short for “I will comply.”  These ham operators might follow this up with “over and out” which is a signal that a person is done speaking and does not expect a reply from the other person.  Nikola Tesla invented the induction coil which was essential to sending and receiving radio waves and Guglielmo Marconi relied on this for his work and there was an argument over who built the first radio which Marconi won.  In 1943, Marconi’s company sued the U.S. government for patent infringement, but the case never made it to court, because the U.S. Supreme Court restored Tesla as the inventor of the radio.  Tesla favored alternating current or AC while Edison favored direct current or DC (which flows in one direction) and they started to butt heads over which was the best form of electrical current while he was working in Edison’s lab in New Jersey.  The war of the currents, was won by Tesla because of AC’s greater efficiency.

Billionaire innovator Elon Musk wants to build an ultra-high-speed underground rail system in the Northeast, which he thinks will help travelers stuck in traffic jams on New Jersey Turnpike.  Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster is an electric sports car that served as the dummy payload for the February 2018 Falcon Heavy test flight and became an artificial satellite of the Sun.

  1. I was only watching that Alice In Wonderland movie just the other day 🙂
Jersey and the rest of the Channel Islands (especially Guernsey) are well worth a visit, despite the ghost!.
I can remember roaring with laughter when Dudley Moore and Peter Cooke often got together and were rude and very crude.
