Sitting on a Cornflake

I don’t write many of my blogs while I am sitting on a toilet, as I usually have my hands full with other business when I am in the bathroom, but you probably don’t need to know this.  Last night while I was laying in my bed, I wrote the beginning to a new song which I am calling ‘Slaughterhouse Blues’.  I am not sure where the inspiration came from, as it has been a while since I listened to the Howlin’ Wolf song ‘Killing Floor’.  I didn’t write much, but here is what I got so far:
My papa done and told me
He said, “Son you gotta be a man
In life no one will give you nothin’
So, you must take whatever you can”
Daddy tried to teach me a lesson
He told me I must go through that door
I went a-kickin’ and a-screamin’
Out on to the killin’ floor
The syllable count is not perfect being 7, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9 and 7 and I am not sure where I am going with the rest of this, but I think that it has potential.

I have a Dell XPS Tower which has a 9th Gen Intel® Core™ i9 9900 (8-Core, 16MB Cache, up to 5GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology) that came with Windows 10 Home 64bit English and this is where I do all of my writing.  It is a relatively fast computer running at 2666MHz and I loaded it up with 32GB Double Data Rate 4 Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory.  I have a wireless mouse and a 24” super VGA flat screen color monitor.  It is located in a spare bedroom and it is mostly private, but I wouldn’t call it a dedicated room.

I like to write about music and even if my post has nothing to do with music, I always try to work a song into it, if I can.  Oddly, it seems that John never wrote about a van in his song ‘I Am the Walrus’, as he was misheard when he said, “Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the man to come.”  When John was asked about the walrus, he said that it came from the Lewis Caroll poem ‘The Walrus and the Carpenter’ that was in Alice in Wonderland.  After John reread the story, he realized that the walrus was the bad guy and that the carpenter was the good guy, and he thought, “Oh, shit, I picked the wrong guy.”  I don’t think that the song would have turned out as good, if it was named ‘I Am the Carpenter’.

  1. Cute little English — I’m figuring — young guy carrying on the tradition. I like his glasses. I used to have a pair, red and round, like that but rimless; don’t know if they got broken or lost… or stolen.

I had never paid attention to the lyric about sitting on a cornflake. It’s a very “every-man” kind of idea. It’s always good to be reminded of Hendrix, too. I, also, think your own song has promise.

  2. I have a spare room where I listen to music rather than write any and spend time on my (very old) laptop.
My brother keeps saying he’ll put some shelves up for me…this was first planned 4/5 years ago!
I have around 800 vinyl albums and roughly 2,000 singles stored in custom heavy duty plastic containers (not counting the 1,700 cds). It all weighs a tonne+ but thankfully I live in a semi-detached bungalow type building.
