Are Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook and Yahoo all collecting data about you? Everybody’s looking for something and it is possible that your personally identifiable information PII is being seen by people that you should not trust. These tech companies that gather information on you, say that it is done to make things easier for you, like the next time that you want to purchase something, or listen to anything, but many people do not consider the risks involved in letting big companies acquire your personal information, especially when you did not give them specific permission to secure this data.
Clarification on the question of, “Should the prompt words be in the lyrics or the title or neither or both?” I don’t know why “neither” is even being brought up here, but last week several bloggers went that way with the prompt and even though I liked their music, this is not appropriate. My response to this question was, “Both would be great, but either is acceptable. I often use songs where the theme or prompt is only in the lyrics. Song Lyric Sunday is more about having fun than obeying the rules.” We had some really great songs last week, but one blogger went with two different songs that shared the same title, another participant went with a song that had two words that were the same in the title, there was a post that used the same song by two different artists and another blogger posted a song that had no relation at all to the prompt, wtf. No one is stopping you from creating a post about music, and you can always write whatever you want on your blog, but please don’t link songs back here that don’t belong. I post the theme or prompt a month in advance for everyone to see, so you have plenty of time to come up with an appropriate song, thus there is no excuse for not being able to find a suitable song. On October 4, 2020 the prompt will be User Choice, go your own way, or do your own thing and I think this will be fun, but till then, please try to follow the prompt. Enough said, slap my ass and call me Sally, rant over.
Last week we had More of the Same Difference and everyone was asked to find a song that fit with one of the prompts Different/Same and we did have some great music and it was interesting to see how different people interpreted this prompt. This week we have the accumulation related prompts of Acquire/Collect/Gather/Secure and hopefully this will fit for everyone. Take some time to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this music challenge, as you will probably find many enjoyable songs and it is quite possibly that you will learn a thing or two. Share your music with others and post a video, try do some research and let everyone know something about the song that you post. Show the lyrics, let’s all listen to our favorite songs and explore some new music. Try to find a song that fits the prompt, then write your post and create a pingback, or you can just place your link in the comments section.
Here are the “rules”:
• Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not. If it does not fit, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.
I am writing about the Grateful Dead song ‘Keep Your Day Job’ this week. Next week I will be writing about the song ‘It Hurts Me Too’ by Elmore James. The upcoming prompts will be:
August 9, 2020 – A song with a harmonica
August 16, 2020 – Clear/Dark/Light
August 23, 2020 – Above/Below/Between
August 30, 2020 – Cruel/Evil/Horrible/Monster/Wicked
I appreciate where you are coming from in your rant, Jim. You give us plenty of time to find a song that fits the prompt.

Thanks for reading my rant and I am only here for fun, but some rules make sense to me.

I understand your rant! I haven’t understood some of the songs posted. Thought it was me. I had my post ready to post and realized I had written next week’s prompt for the harmonica! Back to the drawing board. Guess I will have a jump on next week! I’ll post in the morning. I was getting it done early because the hurricane, now tropical storm was originally predicted to be here tomorrow. Now I have most of the day before I have to worry about the electricity going out. 🙂

Hurricane Isaias is coming in much slower than they originally thought, but it looks like it wants to spend a whole day in Southern Florida.

It’s your prompt and your guidelines, so not a rant, just a strong reminder.

People should follow the prompt and I should be more strict, but I am not here to get into any arguments.

I understand. I follow the wonderful Janis Ian on Facebook. She states that people can voice their opinions, but not get nasty. She is forced to spend way to much time deleting and blocking people.

I really enjoy listening to about 95% of the music that is contributed for Song Lyric Sunday, which means that 5% of it is a chore which I suffer through. I don’t want to block anyone and before I get to that point, I would search for another host to take my place.

I think that some of the “rules” might be more important than others. Musicians and writers can be temperamental, so ought to site them as writing the lyrics, or else they might get uppity about what we are enjoying.
But as I learnt in the BAKE-OFF, people like a free choice when it comes to what they pick…in that respect it is more about the taking part and supporting each other that counts. There are sometimes songs that don’t seem to have anything to do with the theme, but the bloggers who chose them, if they love music, and want to support other bloggers, I would cut them some slack 🙂 Music taste is so varied! It may be hard to find songs in some genres that match some of the trickier themes, and they may not feel comfortable with more popular genres of music.
Well….thats my 50 cents Jim…if they love music and love supporting other bloggers the more the merrier ❤

You made some really valid points Mel and I guess when it is no longer fun for me to host this challenge, that I fill find somebody else to take my place, because it seems that many people love to share their music here. I feel like I have given a lot of slack to all of the participants, and it does not seem that difficult to follow simple directions, but people are going to do what they want to do anyway.

You met the prompt with the second word in the first line of your song. With a harmonica prompt next week, you might go with Dylan again.

I could but I already chose something else for next week.

I see someone has already picked the same song as me! Oh what the heck! Maybe I’ll use it again next week for the harmonica! LOL 🤣

I do enjoy listening to a lot of 70s progressive rock. Gentle Giant are one of my favourites in that genre.
How can I laugh or cry
When my mind is sorely torn?
Badabec had to die
Fair Pantagruel is born
Shall I weep, yes, for why?
Then laugh and show my scorn
Born with a strength untold
Foreseen to have great age
Set in Gargantuan mould
Joyful laugh, yet quick to rage
Princely wisdom, habits bold;
Power, glory, lauded sage
Pantagruel born — the earth was dry and burning
In Paradise dear Badabec prays for him
Pantagruel born — the earth was dry and burning
In Paradise dear Badabec prays for him
Pantagruel born — the earth was dry and burning
In Paradise dear Badabec prays for him
How can I laugh or cry
When my mind is sorely torn?
Badabec had to die;
Fair Pantagruel is born
Shall I weep, yes, for why?
Then laugh and show my scorn

Well said Jim. It was not a rant! I love the “challenge” each week of trying to find the prompt in the title. Usually I can but today was all about the lyrics. The prompts make me read the lyrics and I am always pleasantly surprised by what I learn about the artist or songwriter whether from my own research or by the songs and lyrics that others manage to find. It’s great that you give us prompts well in advance allowing us plenty of time to participate. You do a really great job on this every single week and I appreciate it very much. Thank you! ☺️💕

Not at all. First thing that came to mind was my three choices with the same title, I didn’t even think about the word Same or Different having to be in the lyrics, duh!!!
You’ve got some interesting ones coming up, so I’ll pay more attention!!

Erm,,, I hadn’t read the top part of your post today Jim. Sorry I pulled the plug out of the dam so to speak by asking that question. My friend was curious and he hadn’t (apparently) read the rules for content, so wasn’t adhering (strictly) to the theme idea. He’s now on board fully. I know your rant wasn’t directed at him or me. It’s just very interesting that in the rush to publish, folks might not read as fully as they ought. My bad as much as the next guy, although for this prompt I DO try to find at least one word that links (like two weeks ago. Jon Bon Jovi’s song only had one word that linked it to the prompt and if I hadn’t been foundering around with brain fog, I wouldn’t have chosen that song after I realized only one word was a slender link. Thanks for working so hard on this prompt. You do a great job if nobody’s told you that recently. Keep on keepin’ on.

It does get frustrating dealing with the way that people seem to think that they can invent their own ways of interpreting the prompts and I am so glad that you mentioned it. It is not like people have to scramble to come up with a song as the prompts are given way in advance. I guess this week was a difficult one, because many people ignored the prompts again and went with their own elucidation of how they saw it. The same regulars keep coming back every week and I don’t want to piss anyone off, but it is frustrating when they don’t make the required effort, as I am sure that if they looked a bit harder that there are plenty of songs that fit the bill.
