A Little Busy

Last September ‎I created a new banner for a weekly music challenge that I host which is called Song Lyric Sunday.  I have been a regular participant in SLS since August of 2017, but this challenge was created by Helen Vahdati and according to the list of previous prompts that she sent me, it was started on Sunday June 19, 2016.  When she became ill in the beginning of 2019, I took over as the guest host and I guess I am the permanent host now, but many people still refer to me as the current guest host, out of respect to Helen.

Helen had a Song Lyric Sunday banner, which was very peaceful, but I wanted to go the Tina Turner ‘Proud Mary’ rolling on the river hard and rocking route, so I created a new banner, which was a lot of fun for me.  I had been playing around with MS Paint for years and last year I purchased Corel PaintShop Pro which allowed me to do some extra things like rotate stuff at different angles.  I had this old tee shirt which had a bleach stain on it that looked like a worm wearing a Mexican hat and I thought it looked cool.  I went for this Alice in Wonderland theme and I placed the worm on a peyote button and put a guitar in his hands.

I came up with this idea that the worm should be blowing out smoke which would form the phrase “SMOKING HOT MUSIC” and I found this font with fiery letters, but it was much more than I wanted to spend, so I created my own letters from this font.  There is a music store here in Clermont, next to staples and it has this sign on the front of it that says, “Listening to music may cause uncontrolled outbursts of joy and happiness and also lead you to becoming more energetic, creative and spontaneous”, which I liked, so I asked the owner if he would mind if I used it for my banner and he said it was OK.  This went under the fiery letters and I surrounded everything with musical instruments and musical notes.

I held a Name the Worm poll and Santana won getting 45.45% of the votes, which worked out to be just 5 votes, but I thought since he was the inspiration for this banner, that he was important enough to have a name.  Melanie of sparksfromacombustiblemind has come up with a much simpler looking banner, as mine is a bit busy and I told her that I will run a new banner contest, but that won’t be till next January.  Today Michael asked how we would define artwork and to me, one man’s garbage, is another man’s treasure.

The June 28, 2020 theme or prompt for Song Lyric Sunday this week will be Cool/Freeze/Heat/Melt and I will write about the Grateful Dead song ‘He’s Gone’.  I also host another music challenge which takes place on every other Friday and tomorrow it is my turn to be the host of the Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie MM Music challenge where I will discuss ‘The Breakup Song’ and then later I will submit a Grateful dead song titled ‘If I Had the World to Give’.  Everyone is welcome to join in and have some fun listening to the songs that others submit and also contributing your own music.

Written for Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie Tale Weaver – #281 – Artwork – June 25th hosted by Michael.

  1. Everyone likes different things Jim. I like the original SLS banner and Melanie’s, and remember using the word ‘busy’ when you were asking for readers opinions on your creation. Sid, my suggestion for the snake, didn’t come close, and it’s interesting that you intend to hold a banner contest next year.

    1. Yes there will be a banner contest and I will hold another poll to determine the winner. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so everybody likes different things when it comes down to art. I like the current banner, but it will be up to the participants to decide what they like best. SLS gets mostly the same group of people every week and I make a point of reading every post, even though some of the songs are not my cup of tea,

  2. I think all the banners are beautiful, I liked the original, I like your own creation and of course I like mine. It’s just a different point of view and some will enjoy more activity on their banner for the posts weekly, and others just want something quiet and serene like the original or mine. I find picking which I’ll use (which now that I’ve found the original, I’ll probably mix it in) depends on the genre of music I select for the SLS challenge each week. It’s all good. Thanks once again Jim for stepping up and helping out the fellow blogger who used to host the challenge, and for making it uniquely yours. You rock. But you knew that, didn’t ya?

  3. I remember when you first created the new header Jim I was not very enamoured of it but I grew to like it. What I, and everyone who takes part in SLS, really appreciate is all the time and effort you obviously put into this every week. It’s easy for us to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labors (look, I even spelled it your way!) and forget all the work behind the scenes. Thank you!

    1. Thanks Peter. I look at Song Lyric Sunday as being an extended family and I look forward to seeing what songs everyone will choose. I am more than happy to do this, as I learn stuff every week and the regular participants keep coming back, which means that I have not scared off too many of them yet, with my eclectic taste in music.

  4. Fun to hear how you came up with all the little elements of the banner you created. I like it the best, as there are lots of cute things to look at. Bravo on a wonderful job you are doing as host of SLS! 🙂

  5. Melanie’s banner is gorgeous but imo doesn’t reflect the spirit of most of my music selections which are rock & roll. Yours does! Fun to read how you designed it. The original is kinda bland imo…

  6. I appreciate your hosting of Song Lyric Sunday and Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie Music Challenge. I like the idea of a banner contest but I don’t think one is necessary as the one you created is creative and distinctive. You’re the host and will do as you will, but I also know you are very sensitive to the preferences of your loyal participants. I keep coming back because of your hosting and the other participants.

    1. I put a lot of work into the current banner, but if people decide to go with something else, I am fine with that. I am happy that you keep coming back along with the other regular participants.

  7. Back in the day, before I retired, I used to have to do a lot of PowerPoint presentations. I will never forget when my new boss criticized my slides, saying I used too many different fonts and too many images on any single slide. He said that my slides, with all those different fonts and images crowded onto them, were so busy that they weren’t having the impact they needed to have because they were distracting from the message. “Sometimes less is more,” he said.

    Something to ponder, Jim.

    1. Whatever the majority of participants decides on is OK with me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I like the current one, even if it is a little busy. I look at Song Lyric Sunday as a music party and I think this one is very festive, plus where else are you going to see a smoking worm.
