Meaning in My Life

‘You’re the Inspiration’ is a song written by Peter Cetera and David Foster for the group Chicago and recorded for their fourteenth studio album Chicago 17 (1984), with Cetera singing lead vocals.  The third single released from that album, it reached No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, it got to #14 in the UK and also climbed to the top position on the adult contemporary chart.  Chicago lead singer Peter Cetera and legendary producer David Foster have worked together on some of the most timeless love songs, as they also co-wrote the big hits, ‘Hard To Say I’m Sorry’ and ‘Love Me Tomorrow’.

This tune started out as a song for Kenny Rogers when David Foster was in the studio with him.  Peter was leaving for Italy and he said that he would be glad to help in about two weeks when he got back, but David wanted it done immediately.  Peter told them to come over and they would see what they could do, while he was in the midst of packing.  It took about three hours for them to come up with a little chordal structure for this song and he took it on the plane with him to Italy.  He started writing things about Michelangelo and then he came up with, “oh…you’re the inspiration!”  Peter came back with the words, worked on this melody, and they presented the song to Kenny, but he didn’t have the time or didn’t want to do it.  When Rogers didn’t record it, they rewrote it a bit and recorded it for Chicago.

Chicago described themselves as a “rock and roll band with horns”, and they began as a politically charged, sometimes experimental, rock band and later moved to a predominantly softer sound, generating several hit ballads.  They had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s and they were second only to The Beach Boys in Billboard singles and albums chart success among American bands.  They sold over 38 million units in the US, with 22 gold, 18 platinum, and 8 multi-platinum albums.  Over the course of their career they have had five number-one albums and 21 top-ten singles, making them one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups in history.  The legendary producer and songwriter Foster won 16 Grammy awards from 47 nominations that he received.  Chicago formed in 1967 and they will receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.  This song celebrates someone who has finally found the person who inspires him.

You know our love was meant to be
The kind of love to last forever
And I want you here with me
From tonight until the end of time
You should know
Everywhere I go
Always on my mind
In my heart
In my soul
Baby
You’re the meaning in my life
You’re the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You’re the inspiration
Want to have you near me
I want to have you hear me saying
“No one needs you more than I need you”
And I know (And I know)
Yes I know that it’s plain to see
So in love when we’re together
Now I know (Now I know)
That I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time
You should know (Yes, you need to know )
Everywhere I go
You’re always on my mind
You’re in my heart
In my soul
You’re the meaning in my life
You’re the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You’re the inspiration
Want to have you near me
I want to have you hear me saying
“No one needs you more than I need you”
(No one needs you more than I)
Want to have you near me
I want to have you hear me saying
“No one needs you more than I need you”
(No one needs you more)
You’re the meaning in my life
You’re the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You’re the inspiration
When you love somebody
‘Til the end of time
When you love somebody
Always on my mind / No one needs you more than I
When you love somebody
‘Til the end of time
When you love somebody
Always on my mind / No one needs you more than I
