My Guiding Star

‘You’re the First, the Last, My Everything’ is a song that was recorded by Barry White from his third studio album Can’t Get Enough (1974).  The song was written by White, Tony Sepe and Peter Radcliffe and it reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the UK Singles Chart.  It was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 1974, and certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).  White’s road manager Peter Radcliffe originally wrote the track as a country song with the title ‘You’re My First, You’re My Last, My In-Between’, and this went unrecorded for 21 years.  White recorded it as a disco song, retaining most of the musical structure while rewriting the lyrics.  ‘You’re the First, the Last, My Everything’ was White’s fourth top ten hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

The song is about being in love with someone, living with & loving that someone forever, while staying true to them.  It is a romantic song about a true and lasting love.  Music has a mysterious connection to sex and most people connect sex and music with Marvin Gaye and his songs ‘Sexual Healing’ and ‘Let’s Get It On’ and also with Barry White and ‘Can’t Get Enough of Your Love Babe’ and this song.  Barry Eugene Carter, better known by Barry White was an American singer-songwriter, musician, record producer and composer and he acquired the nickname “the walrus of love”, because he was a huge man with had a deep voice and the singer that most housewives considered when they made love.  White’s influence will live on through the entire generations conceived to his wonderfully explicit tributes to the great love between a man and a woman.  Besides his voice, Barry also played piano, harpsichord, keyboards and drums and he worked as an actor appearing in a few episodes of The Simpsons.  White was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards and he won two.  Barry White passed away on July 4, 2003 at the age of 58 due to kidney failure.  In 2004, White was posthumously inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame.

My first, the last, my everything
And the answer to all my dreams
You’re my sun, my moon, my guiding star
My kind of wonderful, that’s what you are
I know there’s only, only one like you
There’s no way they could have made two
You’re all I’m living for, your love I’ll keep forevermore
First, you’re the last, my everything
And with you I’ve found so many things
A love so new, only you could bring
Can’t you see it’s you? You make me feel this way (Can’t you see it’s you?)
You’re like a first morning dew on a brand new day
I see so many ways that I
Can love you ‘til the day I die
You’re my reality, yet I’m lost in a dream
You’re the first, the last, my everything
I know there’s only, only one like you
There’s no way they could have made two
Girl, you’re my reality, but I’m lost in a dream
You’re the first, you’re the last, my everything
You and me babe is you

  1. I was always a fan of his growing up in the early 70s. I almost used his songs for SLS this past week. I adore his voice and remember dancing to his music under neon and mirror ball lights. Thanks for the memory.
