Honey, It’s You

The Grateful Dead song ‘Help on the Way’ was recorded on their eighth studio album Blues for Allah which was released in 1975.  It was the band’s third album on their own Grateful Dead Records label and their third studio album in a row.  The song has lyrics that were written as a series of aphorisms (concise, terse, laconic [using very few words], and/or memorable expression of a general truth or principle), and it contains some of the most incomprehensible lyrics that Hunter ever wrote, but they are linked by visionary imagery.  There are angels in flame, poised for flight, crippled but free and a dream that will never come true.  Hunter makes an existential plea for love while he depicts Paradise as a winged female, surrounded by flaming angels, descending on a wave, painting a picture that might resonate in a thousand brains differently.

‘Help on the Way’ was followed by the instrumental ‘Slipknot!’ on the album and in concert these two songs were often followed by ‘Franklin’s Tower’ and ‘The Music Never Stopped’ which were all on the same album.  One of the things that made the Grateful Dead so special was their ability to flawlessly transition from one song into the next, often taking the audience, as well as some band members, completely by surprise.  ‘Help on the Way’ transitioning into ‘Slipknot’ and finishing with ‘Franklin’s Tower’ is one of their most beloved three-song suites.  In this song the Dead were fully smoothing out, stretching their jazzy solos out, knowing that without love in the dream, it will never come true.

Paradise waits
On the crest of a wave
Her angels in flame
She has no pain
Like a child, she is pure
She is not to blame
Poised for flight
Wings spread bright
Spring from night
Into the sun
Don’t stop to run
She can fly like a lie
She cannot be outdone
Tell me the cost
I can pay
Let me go
Tell me love is not lost
Sell everything
Without love, day to day,
Insanity is king
I will pay
Day by day
Lock, bolt and key
Crippled but free
I was blind
All the time
I was learning to see
Help on the way
I know only this
I’ve got you today
Don’t fly away
‘Cause I love what I love
And I want it that way
I will stay
One more day
Like I say
Honey, it’s you
Without love in the dream
It will never come true

    1. The audience was constantly yelling out songs that they wanted to hear and each of the musicians would start to play a few chords until they decided what to do. No Grateful Dead concert was ever duplicated, they were all original in the content of the songs that were played.

  1. Saw that -slipknot- on the video and got all excited! I didn’t know Corey Taylor did anything with the Dead!!! Wrong… But this was a song I had never heard even if it wasn’t a collaboration with Slipknot, which would have been a damn interesting video if you ask me……
