Having a High Time

I used to think that life was all about partying, getting high, drinking and listening to music, but I found out that life also comes with pain and misery.  I am writing this post as a response to Fandango’s Provocative Question which asks, “What does living “the good life” mean to you?  Do you think that you’re living “the good life”?  I think that “living the good life” is about being alive and being happy, which includes having someone special in your life, and not having any financial or health worries.  Three simple things, stay alive, find a partner and don’t worry is all it takes to find happiness.

You never know what life has in store for you, but if you learn to roll with the punches, you can be happy.  I am going to discuss the Grateful Dead song ‘High Time’, because it is about adapting to adversity.  In this song a guy is breaking up with his girl, he is lamenting this and trying to cope with the loss.  He misunderstood her when she told him goodbye.  He overloaded his wagon with too much hay and it gets stuck in the mud.  He tells his girl that he is serious and that he is not finding it as easy as he thought it would be for them to live the good life together.  He is so frustrated that he wants to fight somebody, but instead he goes to his girl.  He is looking for something new, but he is upset because his wagon won’t move.  He wishes that life could be better for them and that their troubles and pains would go away at least wait till tomorrow.  If things could only work out for them the way he wants, they would be living the good life together.  They would go inside when the rain comes and go out again when it is gone.

Finding happiness seems simple and one person’s definition of living the good life will not be the same for another.  If you can be satisfied with what you have in your life, then you are loving the good life.  I have my writing to satisfy me, so I feel that I am living the good life.

You told me goodbye, how was I to know
You didn’t mean goodbye, you meant please don’t let me go?
I was having a high time, living the good life, well I know
The wheels are muddy, got a ton of hay,
Now listen here, Baby, ‘cause I mean what I say.
I’m having a hard time, living the good life, well I know.
I was losing time, I had nothing to do,
No one to fight, I came to you.
Wheels broke down, leader won’t draw,
The line is busted, the last one I saw.
Tomorrow come trouble, tomorrow come pain,
Now don’t think too hard Baby, ‘cause I know what I’m saying.
I could show you a high time, living the good life, don’t be that way.
Nothing’s for certain, it could always go wrong,
Come in when it’s raining, go on out when it’s gone.
We could have us a high time, living the good life, well I know.
