My Happy Home

Jesse Fuller was an American one-man band musician, who was able to play several instruments simultaneously and he is best known for his songs ‘San Francisco Bay Blues’ which was covered by Janis Joplin among many others and ‘Beat It on Down the Line’ which was one of the first songs covered by the Grateful Dead.  The Grateful Dead did this when they were known as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and back then it was sung by banjo, mandolin and guitar player Tom Stone, but Bob Weir sang lead once it was a Dead song.  The Grateful Dead performed this song over 300 times at their concerts and they also played another Jesse Fuller tune called ‘Monkey and the Engineer’.

This song was written about a railroad hobo who needs to keep moving to get a job.  He wants to go back up North to his old simple life where he was happy with his girl and where he feels that he belongs.  He had a job working in Joe Brown’s coal mine and his sweet woman is still waiting there for him, so that is where he will make his happy home.

Well this job I got, is just a little too hard
Running out of money, Lord, I need more pay
I’m gonna wake up in the morning, Lord
I’m gonna pack up my bags
I’m gonna beat it on down the line

Goin’ down the line (goin’ down the line)
Goin’ down the line (goin’ down the line)
Goin’ down the line (goin’ down the line)
Goin’ down the line (goin’ down the line)
Goin’ down the line (goin’ down the line)
Goin’ down the line (goin’ down the line)
Beat it on down the line

Yes and I’ll be waiting at the station, Lord, when that train pulls on by
I’m going back where I belong
Yes and I’m goin’ north to my same old used to be
Down in Joe Brown’s coal mine

Coal mine (coal mine)
Coal mine (coal mine)
Coal mine (coal mine)
Coal mine (coal mine)
Coal mine (coal mine)
Coal mine (coal mine)
Down in Joe Brown’s coal mine

Yes I’m goin’ back to that shack way across the railroad track
That’s where I think I belong
Yes I got a sweet woman, Lord, she’s waiting there for me
That’s where I’m gonna make my happy home

Happy home (happy home)
Happy home (happy home)
Happy home (happy home)
Happy home (happy home)
Happy home (happy home)
Happy home (happy home)
That’s where I’m gonna make my happy home

Written for Paula’s Thursday Inspiration 33 where this week’s theme is home.
