That Is A Wrap

Rap music came out around the same time as Disco and that is when the music industry took a dive for the worst.  Rock and Roll was still around, but the newer generation was not listening to it and since they are the biggest consumers, the record industry started catering to them.  I never really liked either one, except for some of the Bee Gees songs and the only rap song that I ever liked is Sugarhill Gang’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’.  My nephews used to listen to the Beastie Boys and I didn’t understand what they saw in that music, but it represented their generation and I guess that is why they liked it.

Like everyone else, I watched the 1990 movie House Party with Kid and Play and they seemed harmless, but shortly after that Rap music went dark.  I never got into the whole gangster rap thing between the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur as that was just not my thing.  After that rap music seemed to be all about calling women bitches and dropping the F bomb as often as possible.  I enjoy things that rhyme, but there is something about rap that annoys the hell out of me.  Music has a way of becoming personal to its listeners and that is what makes music such a special thing, as it has so much variety allowing one person to enjoy their music and dislike somebody else’s.

Written for 9/21/19 Linda G. Hill’s ‘Life in progress’ Stream of Consciousness Saturday where the prompt is “wrap/rap”.

  1. I don’t like to criticize rap because I don’t understand it. I mean I literally don’t understand the words when I hear rap. It’s too fast and jumbled up. It doesn’t sound like “music” to me, but neither does screamy death metal and a lot of other stuff. I figure let people like what they like and there’s plenty for me to enjoy anyway.

As far as the idea of rap being misogynistic, a lot of music is. Bad girls and wicked women who lure men to the darkness are a staple of songs, art, literature, etc. God forbid you guys take responsibility for yourselves! 🤣🤣🤣

    1. I am a guy, but I don’t enjoy being grouped in with other men that are prejudiced against women. I love women and I would never refer to them as being bitches or whores like some rap songs do. Everything else that you said, I agree with 100 %.

    1. People are going to like what they like and only occasionally will you ever be able to change their minds. I am going with Clothing/Hat/Pants/Scarf/Shirt/Shoes/Tie as the prompt for Song Lyric Sunday tomorrow, just in case you want to contribute a song.
