I’ll Try To Love Again

Your first love will always define the way you understand every relationship that follows, so the first woman or man that you fall in love with will always stay in your memory.  The first time you get cut usually gives you an experience that you won’t forget at least for a while and the cuts or hardships that come later should be easier to deal with.  Cat Stevens sold his song ‘The First Cut is the Deepest’ to soul singer P.P. Arnold for £30 or $40.  Patricia Ann Cole, known professionally as P. P. Arnold, is an American soul singer who got her start as an Ikette, one of Ike & Tina Turner’s backup performers.  Rod Stewart recorded the definitive version of this song ten years later which went to #21 in the US and #1 in the UK and the Sheryl Crow version in 2003, made it to #14 in the US and #37 in the UK.  The song was written in 1967 and I think it was the fifth song that Cat Stevens wrote coming after ‘I Love My Dog’, ‘Matthew and Son’, ‘Here Comes My Baby’ and ‘I’m Gonna Get Me a Gun’.

I would have given you all of my heart
But there’s someone who’s torn it apart
And he’s taking just all that I had
But if you wanna try to love again
Baby, I’ll try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby, I know
The first cut is the deepest
But when it comes to being lucky, he’s cursed
When it comes to lovin’ me, he’s worse

I still want you by my side
Just to help me dry the tears that I’ve cried
But I’m sure gonna give you a try
If you wanna try to love again
Try,
Baby, I’ll try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby, I know
The first cut is the deepest
But when it comes to being lucky, he’s cursed
When it comes to lovin’ me, he’s worse

I still want you by my side
Just to help me dry the tears that I’ve cried
But I’m sure gonna give you a try
‘Cause if you wanna try to love again
(Try to love again, try to love again)
Baby, I’ll try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby, I know
The first cut is the deepest
But when it comes to being lucky, he’s cursed
When it comes to lovin’ me, he’s worse

The first cut is the deepest, baby, I know
The first cut is the deepest
(Try to love again)

  1. Great tune! I think Sheryl’s take on it is my fave, followed by Keith Hampshire’s (a Canadian cover of it from 70s). Funny thing is it may have earned Cat more cash than any other song even though he didn’t do well with it himself- it’s won Ivor Novello awards, I believe, as most played song (presumably on British radio) with all the cover versions

    1. Nice comment Dave and I agree with everything that you said. The Ivor Novello awards are the Champions of Music Creators. I have never listened to the Welsh composer and actor but I read that he became one of the most popular British entertainers of the first half of the 20th century.

  2. I liked this version and Rod Stewart’s. I didn’ realise that Cat Stevens had written it, though I do remember P.P.Arnold having a massive hit with it. She was on the radio a little while ago as she’s just released a new album and did a live rendition of this. She still has the voice, but I prefer Sheryl’s.
