Couch Potatoes

The ancient Romans always ate dinner sitting on chairs, or reclining on a couch laying on their sides.  I don’t think that I could eat a whole meal while laying on my side on a couch, maybe some snacks, but not an entire meal.  In a typical day the Romans ate three meals, just like we do and the big meal was their dinner.  I have had breakfast in bed when I was sick, but I had to sit up to eat it.  The human body was designed to digest food in an upright position and if you eat food while you are lying down, your body will have a difficult time trying to digest that food and this will probably lead to indigestion.  I guess there must have been a whole lot of belching going on at these Roman couch dinners.
