Borrow The Lyrics Challenge – Box Of Rain

This is my second time doing this challenge, first I was nominated by Paula of Light Motifs II and now J-Dubs Grin and Bear It has asked me to participate again.  I chose ‘Miss You’ by the Rolling Stones the first time.

Rules:

  1. You need to choose a verse from a song and use it in an original poem or story.
  2. You must include the name of the song and the singer at the end or beginning.
  3. You need to challenge someone else and invent ONE rule they need to follow.
  4. You must credit the person who started this challenge (a.k.a. PJ – I’m sorry for the inconvenience) and the person who challenged you, which was Paula.
  5. You must include the rules of this challenge.
  6. Jilly Beans included her extra rule being that the song that I choose must include an element being either air, water, wind, or fire.

This is such a fun challenge and I have the perfect song for it.  The song that I am using has two of the four elements, those being wind and water, because wind is basically like air.  Another line in this song says, “Like a moth before a flame” thus it has fire, so this song meets 3 of the four elements.  It is a Grateful Dead song and it is called ‘Box Of Rain’ and it was written by Phil Lesh who sings lead vocals and plays bass guitar and Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics. It came out on the American Beauty album which was released in November 1970.  Phil wrote this song for his dying father, so it is sort of sad and a “box of rain” stands for the world that we live in.  Phil would make the long drive to the hospital to see his dad whenever he got the chance and sometimes his father was so sick that he would sleep the whole time Phil went to see him.  The verse I selected for my sad story about visiting a loved one in the hospital is “To watch for you while you’re sleeping?”.

Look out of any window and my love will find you there.  Maybe you are tired from chemo treatments and I will understand.  I don’t know what is waiting to meet you once you are gone, but I know that I will miss you.  I remember when we spent an afternoon together in splintered sunlight watching the birds and the rain, or was that all a dream that I dreamed while I was coming home to you.  What do you want me to do, maybe I’ll find direction around some corner and see things clear some other day.  I could watch out for you while you’re sleeping, but don’t be surprised if I start dreaming with you.  Look into any eyes and you will find the sun is shining or birds are winging or rain is falling from a heavy sky.  I know that you are tired and broken, and I hope that you don’t mind if I put a ribbon in your hair.

Look out of any window
Any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
Birds are winging or
Rain is falling from a heavy sky,
What do you want me to do,
To do for you to see you through?
For this is all a dream we dreamed
One afternoon long ago
Walk out of any doorway
Feel your way, feel your way
Like the day before
Maybe you’ll find direction
Around some corner
Where it’s been waiting to meet you,
What do you want me to do,
To watch for you while you’re sleeping?
Well please don’t be surprised
When you find me dreaming too

Look into any eyes
You find by you, you can see
Clear through to another day
Maybe been seen before
Through other eyes on other days
While going home,
What do you want me to do,
To do for you to see you through?
It’s all a dream we dreamed
One afternoon long ago

Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
To another land
Maybe you’re tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
With words half spoken
And thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
To do for you to see you through
A box of rain will ease the pain
And love will see you through

Just a box of rain,
Wind and water,
Believe it if you need it,
If you don’t just pass it on
Sun and shower,
Wind and rain,
In and out the window
Like a moth before a flame

And it’s just a box of rain
I don’t know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
Or leave it if you dare
And it’s just a box of rain
Or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
And a short time to be there

I am selecting willowdot21An insight to a heart mind and soul with a new rule that the song she uses must contain the word ribbon in it.

  1. Sweet and sentimental. The twang of that guitar gives me chills in the best way possible. Thanks Jim for joining in. I knew you’d knock it outta the park 🙂
