Plenty Of Money

Rudy Clark wrote the song ‘Got My Mind Set on You’ which became a No. 1 US and No. 2 UK hit for George Harrison in 1987.  In 1963, Freddie and the Dreamers had a Top 10 hit covering his song ‘If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody’.  In 1964, Betty Everett recorded the Top 10 soul classic ‘It’s in His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)’, which was written by Rudy Clark.  In 1966, the Young Rascals released a #1 hit single ‘Good Lovin’’ also written by Clark.

‘Got My Mind Set on You’ was originally recorded by James Ray an African American R&B singer in 1962, under the title ‘I’ve Got My Mind Set on You’.  Harrison bought a copy of the single in the summer of 1963 when visiting his sister Louise in Illinois.  Many years later when he was writing his Cloud Nine album, he remembered the song and decided to cover it.  ELO bandleader Jeff Lynne who would later form The Traveling Wilburys in 1988 with George produced this song along with Harrison.  This was the last song by a solo Beatle to hit #1 in the US, hitting the top slot for one week in February 1988. Harrison was also the first Beatle to hit #1 with his ‘My Sweet Lord’.  For a period of several months in 1988, George Harrison held the remarkable distinction having the longest length between his number hits, as 15 years had elapsed between ‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)’ in 1973 and 1988’s ‘Got My Mind Set on You’.  However, The Beach Boys scored a number one hit with ‘Kokomo’ in November 1988, 22 years after their last number one hit, ‘Good Vibrations’ in December 1966.

Everyone thinks that this song is about a girl, but it is about writing a book, which takes a whole lot of time and patience. Who knew George Harrison wrote books?  Goodreads says that they have 66 books for sale that were written by George Harrison.  Time is money and to write a book, you have your mind set right because this can be frustrating.  Unless you are a published author under contract to write your next book, you are basically working for free and hoping that you might get published, so you can make some money.  Time is precious and the longer it takes you to finish your book, the longer you will have to survive without any money.

I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you

But it’s gonna take money
A whole lot of spending money
It’s gonna take plenty of money
To do it right, child

It’s gonna take time
A whole lot of precious time
It’s gonna take patience and time, um
To do it, to do it, to do it, to do it, to do it
To do it right, child

I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you

And this time I know it’s for real
The feelings that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it
I know that I really can do it

I got my mind set on you
Set on you
I got my mind set on you
Set on you

But it’s gonna take money
A whole lot of spending money
It’s gonna take plenty of money
To do it right, child

It’s gonna take time
A whole lot of precious time
It’s gonna take patience and time, um
To do it, to do it, to do it, to do it, to do it
To do it right

I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you

And this time I know it’s for real
The feelings that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it
I know that I really can do it

But it’s gonna take money
A whole lot of spending money
It’s gonna take plenty of money
To do it right, child

It’s gonna take time
A whole lot of precious time
It’s gonna take patience and time, um
To do it, to do it, to do it, to do it, to do it
To do it right

Set on you
Set on you

Set on you
Set on you
Set on you
Set on you
Set on you
Set on you
I set my mind on you
I’m gonna set on you

  1. I had no idea he wrote a bunch of books. Maybe he talks about what the song is about in one of them. Who knows why one video is about a guy after a girl and the other set looks like a haunted Masterpiece Theater. Marketing decisions…. It’s a good song. My older son loved this and I have him on cassette tape singing the chorus 🙂
