Boogie Woogie

Boogie is a jazz variation style of blues played on the piano with a strong, fast beat.  Nobody really knows where the name “Boogie-Woogie” came from, although the music genre can be dated as far back as the 1870’s in the lumber camps of old-time Texas.  Boogie woogie is an extremely rhythmical and exciting piano style that was popular in the 1920s and played in honky-tonks on the South Side of Chicago.  This style of music was developed in African American communities to let the listeners move to the music and it is very conducive to dancing.  The left piano hand plays bass notes while the right hand is free to experiment playing riffs.

Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as rock and roll in the United States in the early 1950s, and it has developed into a genre of extremely diverse styles.  The history of rock music has been volatile and unpredictable as the genre has constantly redefined and reinvented itself since its emergence.  Every now and then, I hear people say that rock is dead, but as long as people still listen to this music it lives.  There is no doubt that music has changed and that hip-hop and R&B have become more popular than rock, but as Billy Joel said, It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me.  I read that when boogie-woogie is mixed with rhythm & blues that it becomes rock & roll.  Keith Richards said, “If you don’t know the blues, there’s no point in picking up the guitar and playing rock’n’roll or any other form of popular music”.

A Rolling Stone is a hard solid nonmetallic mineral matter made from a rock fragment that is larger than a cobble and under the influence of a force, which is most likely gravity, that is unless you are talking about the magazine or the members of a British group.  The gravity which I just mentioned has nothing to do with the Sandra Bullock space movie, but just because a person is weightless, that does not mean there is no gravity.  In 45 B.C., Publilius Syrus wrote the proverb “A rolling stone gathers no moss”, of course he wrote this in Latin and the words are completely different, but this is roughly what it is translated to.  This statement is a reflection on the well known principle that since mosses and lichens (simple slow-growing plant that typically forms a low crusty, leaf like, or becomes a branching growth on rocks, walls, and trees) are slow-growing organisms that won’t thrive when they are disrupted or disturbed.  A sure way to prevent a colony of moss from growing on a stone is to move it about, or shake that thing.  A rolling stone also refers to someone who is a wanderer, unable to settle to any job or lifestyle and therefore characterized as free to do their own thing.
