My Dog Will Always Come Through

Bee Halton at The Bee Writes Love Is In Da Blog 2019 ~ A Music Festival has buzzed us to write about a Love Song For My Pet and I decided to go with the Cat Stevens song ‘I Love My Dog’.  When Steven Demetre Georgiou was a child, he found a Dachshund tied to a post.  He searched for the dog’s owner, but no one claimed the dog, and Steven who had not taken the name Cat Stevens yet, now owned a dog.  He started out as a songwriter for hire, writing ‘The First Cut is the Deepest’, which he sold to soul singer P.P. Arnold for $40.  In 1965, he began performing under the name Steve Adams.  Steven remembered the dog years later as an adult, and wrote a song in tribute to him going as far as making the point that while relationships can come and go, a dog will stay true and loyal forever.  At 18, he met manager/producer Mike Hurst of the British vocal group the Springfields (which also included Dusty Springfield).  Hurst helped Stevens land a record contract, leading to his first single, ‘I Love My Dog’, which went to Number Twenty-Eight in the U.K.  Cat Stevens sang about his love for his furry friend on his 1967 debut album Matthew and Son.

Cat Stevens has donated his very first hit song ‘I Love My Dog’, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2017 for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals PETA the animal-rights organization to use in a brand-new video in celebration of National “Adopt a Shelter Pet” Day.  The video shows a man stumbling across a paper advertisement for senior dog adoption.  He looks around his apartment, sets up a dog bowl and bed, grabs a leash and meets his new dog.  The man shares some quality time with his dog, taking him for walks, petting him and lounging with him.  The clip then shows the owner bringing the dog to a veterinarian and discovering that he’s ill.  Sadly, the dog passes away, but as the video comes to an end, the man is shown preparing to adopt another pooch from a shelter.

The death of a pet can hurt as much as the loss of a close relative or friend.  The emotions can become overwhelming, because people can become so close with their pets.  Grieving for the loss of your pet is an important part of coping.  When my last dog died, I gave away all of her toys, her leash and her bowls, because she was such a big part of my life and I was too sad seeing all of her stuff around when she was no longer with me.  In April 2014, as Cat Stevens, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through

All he asks from me is the food to give him strength
All he ever needs is love and that he knows he’ll get

So, I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through

All the pay I need comes a-shinin’ through his eyes
I don’t need no cold water to make me realize that

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through

Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana
Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through

Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana
Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana

I love my dog, baby, I love my dog
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
I said, I love my dog, baby, I love my dog
Baby, I love my dog
