Carlys Song

I am going to start off all of my JusJoJan posts this way, at least until someone makes a comment, thus Janet called him Joseph which he thought was too formal, so he said, “It’s JusJoJan.” Today we get a prompt from Virgobeauty and the word for today is “enigmatic”.  I imagine that some of my readers that looked at the title of this post might be thinking that this is going to be about the Carly Simon song ‘You’re So Vain’, which is a good guess, but that will not work out for this prompt today.  I listen to music for enjoyment and songs can soothe my mood or energize me, they may tell a story and inform or persuade me. Many musicians are story tellers, but not all musicians do this and their songs can become enigmatic. Sometimes the lyrics fly under the radar and the song is more about the music.

Enigma is the husband and wife duo of Michael and Sandra Cretu.  Michael worked as a studio musician before working on his own material under the group name Enigma, and Sandra provided the vocals.  Sandra married Michael in January 1988 and she was a German pop singer who already had hit singles as a solo artist and one of them was her 1985 song ‘(I’ll Never Be) Maria Magdalena’.  Michael Cretu is a musician, singer, songwriter, and producer, who gained worldwide fame as the founder and musician behind the German musical project Enigma, formed in 1990.  Cretu had released several solo records, collaborated with various artists, and produced albums for Sandra his then wife, before he conceived the idea of a New Age, Worldbeat project, which consists of a series of albums.

Carlys Song was released as a single in Australia, it peaked at number 91 on the ARIA singles chart in November 1993, spending one week in the top 100.  The haunting chant in this song is of Mongolian origin and the song also features a tinge of Gregorian chanting in it.  The song uses samples from the Mongolian folk music vocalist Namjilyn Norovbanzad.  She is famous for her rendition of ‘Urtyn duu’, a traditional Mongolian folk song which has been handed down from generation to generation for centuries.  This genre is called “Long song”, not only because the songs are long, but also because each syllable of text is extended for a long duration.  A four-minute song may consist of only ten words.

‘Carlys Song’ was written by Michael Cretu and the vocals are whispered by Sandra Cretu.  The lyrics actually refers to the main character from Sliver, Carly Norris (played by Sharon Stone).  In the music video for the song, the scene is set in New York City and entirely filmed in sepia.  People are seen floating through the air weightlessly but remain unseen by the surrounding people.  It is pretty clear that Sharon Stone lacks the ability to fly.  The lyrics in ‘Carlys Song’ don’t seem to be too difficult to interpret or understand, but they are mysterious to me, as I have never seen the movie.

Carly don’t be sad
Life is crazy
Life is mad
Don’t be afraid

Carly don’t be sad
That’s your destiny
The only chance
Take it, take it in your hands

Life is mad
Don’t be afraid

Written for Linda G. Hill’s ‘Life in progress’ JusJoJan January fourth prompt “enigmatic”.

  1. I haven’t seen the movie either. And, while I’ve heard the song enough times to be tired of it (but did like it), I didn’t know that was the name of it or that it was from a movie.
