Today I have Bruce Jenner, or should I say Caitlyn Jenner’s favorite song, ‘Get Back’ which was produced by George Martin and released in the UK in April 1969. In the US it was released on a single in May 1969. The single gives the performers as The Beatles with Billy Preston, giving Preston the distinction of being the only person to share credits with the Beatles on record. The song has so much information written about it, that I am dizzy from my research, so I won’t put you through all of that as this song was made to be enjoyed and not analyzed. I have the famous rooftop performance video for you to watch, that appeared in the Let It Be film.
McCartney said that they were sitting in the studio and they made this song up out of thin air, they started to write words there and then when they finished it, they recorded it and made it into a song to roller-coast by. This song was developed into three verses, with the first being the ‘Jojo’ verse, the second being the ‘Lorreta Martin’ verse and the third was the racially charged satirical verse about immigration attitudes and the resulting racism that was brewing in Britain at the time. This song ‘Get Back’ was The Beatles’ 19th single of the 22 singles that the group released. Besides the lyrics, Paul McCartney does some riffing “Your mama’s waiting for ya, wearing her high-heel shoes and her low-neck sweater”, while Lennon was hoping that the band had “passed the audition”.
Jojo and Lorreta Martin and both just made up names. Jojo was a dude that tried to be a recluse by leaving Tucson and moving to California. Loretta Martin thought she was a woman, kind of like Bruce Jenner, “But she was another man”. It seems like he or she pissed off all the girls, because they “say she’s got it coming”. “But she gets it while she can”, and I guess that she is getting laid more than they are. You can just imagine how much these girls will despise Loretta once she completes her gender reassignment surgery.
Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it wouldn’t last
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
For some California grass
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back Jojo, go home
Get back, get back
Back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Back to where you once belonged
Get back Jo
Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she’s got it coming
But she gets it while she can
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back Loretta, go home
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back, get back

McCartney kept looking at Yoko every time he sang “Get back to where you once belonged”.

Great classic here! I don’t know that I’ve ever truly listened to the lyrics to ‘catch a meaning’ before. Appreciated that.
