What Do You Do When It Happens

Oh god, kill me now, here it comes again.  You can’t hold it back, so it is best to smile and just let them rip.  It happens to everyone as it is just part of being human.  The digestive system is made up of the gastrointestinal tract aka GI tract or digestive tract and the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.  The GI tract is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus.  The intestines are part of the digestive system of the body and they are sometimes called the guts or bowels.  This system deals with all the food and drink that you take into your body.  When food reaches the small intestine, your body will release enzymes to help break down the foods and to facilitate nutrient absorption as a necessary part of the digestion process.  Peristalsis is a series of wave-like muscular contractions that take place to move the food along the digestive tract.  These activities, which involve the movement of gas and partially-digested foods, contribute to the growling and rumbling sounds that are known as borborygmus.  Irritable bowel syndrome is caused by the nerves controlling the muscles of the intestines.  Stomach growling is often accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, constipation, or diarrhea.

A lot of things happen to your food after you chew it and before its makes an appearance out the other end.  Every single mouthful has to make its way through your stomach and go through your intestines, during which nutrients are absorbed and toxins are extracted.  The gut is more than a mere food processing system and it needs time to do all its work on food effectively, as the food needs to pass into your intestines, and this gut transit time varies depending on your metabolism and what you’ve eaten before being excreted.  You should pace yourself while eating, as if food passes through your system too fast, than your body won’t absorb the optimum number of nutrients and if it passes through too slow, too much water will be drawn from the stool making it harder to pass, causing issues like constipation and associated concerns such as hemorrhoids or diverticulitis.  If you have a sluggish bowel than you might want to eat more fibre to speed up how fast food moves through the gut.

Flatulence is funny because a human body part is playing music and some people can control it just by pulling their fingers. Farts are a reminder that the civilized mind does not control all of what we are.  They tend to sneak out and they often speak impolitely.  Sancho feels the brutal need to take a poop and doesn’t want to wander off into the dark to do it, so he drops his pants and tries to let it pass as quietly as possible.  At one point, though, a farting sound leaks out and rouses Don Quixote’s attention.  Don Quixote starts smelling the poop, and he thinks that Sancho has done it in his pants because of fright and he suggests (while holding his nose) that his servant should have gone a few steps further away to finish his business.  Always remember that it is better to try to poop and pass gas, than to try to pass gas and end up pooping.

  1. My now deceased hubby used to say “Hey! Who stepped on a duck?” whenever that happened to him (i.e. he let one loose, intentionally or not…) I’d never seen that clip, but must admit laughing until the dog ran away because she was afraid SHE’D be blamed… 😀
