Nothing To Write Home About

I know that last week I posted ‘Not All It Is Cracked Up To Be’, and although this one is quite simular it is a different saying. What can I say, I am in love with idioms.  When something is pretty good, or at least decent, but far from the best ever, it would be considered nothing to write home about.  This would usually rate about a 6 on a scale that goes up to 10, but it can also be something that is much worse.  This thing would be not very interesting, or special, or exciting and it would be considered as unappealing, insignificant, inconsequential or picayune.  When something is ‘nothing to write home about’, it is not especially remarkable or noteworthy, it would to be rather dull, mediocre, uninteresting, or unimportant.  This is a roundabout way of saying that something is poor, average, or limited, or not of high quality.  The etymologists say that this idiom originated in the late 1800s, possibly among troops stationed far from home, and became widespread during World War I.  I think that Trump should learn the meaning of this idiom and then maybe he would not Tweet so much.
