A variety of people including Mark Twain, Satchel Paige, and William Purkey are attributed to this saying. No matter who said it, this is a statement that says you should not let anyone stop you from doing what you love. I always enjoyed listening to music, but I ruined my singing voice and now I can only sing off key. This happened when I was young and around Christmas time my brother and sister and my friends and I all went out to knock on the neighbors doors and sing Christmas carols. The word carol actually means dance or a song of praise and joy! Most of our neighbors were happy when carol singers came around knocking on their doors and most would listen to us singing and then they would give us some money, but some would just shut the door and say bah humbug.
I figured out that if I sang off key, that the people would physically wince hearing me miss all of the notes and as a result they would give us money quicker. I was having fun tormenting people with my voice and I became real good at this, but in the long run this only ended up hurting me. I was out of tune with the other singers and I let my voice crack. There was nothing wrong with my brain or the muscle movements in my throat. I was not tone deaf and I knew that my pitch was off, as I was purposely singing slightly flat or slightly sharp. I was having so much fun singing each song my way and watching the neighbors cover their ears, but eventually the others did not want me to sing with them anymore.
Holly holy eyes
Dream of only me
Where I am, what I am
What I believe in
Holly holy
Holly holy dream
Wanting only you
And she comes
And I run just like the wind will
Holly holy
Sing a song
(Sing) Sing a song of songs
(Sing) Sing it out
Sing it strong (Sing, sing, sing, sing)
Yeah
Yeah
Call the sun in the dead of the night
And the sun’s gonna rise in the sky
Touch a man who can’t walk upright
And that lame man, he’s gonna fly
And I fly
And I fly
Holly holy love
Take the lonely child
And the seed
Let it be filled with tomorrow
Holly holy
Sing it strong (Sing, sing, sing, sing)
Yeah…
Sing it strong (Sing, sing, sing, sing)
Yeah
Yeah
Call the sun in the dead of the night
And the sun’s gonna rise in the sky
Touch a man who can’t walk upright
And that lame man, he’s gonna fly
And I fly, yeah
And I fly
Holly holy dream
Dream of only you
Holly holy sun
Holly holy rain
Holly holy love
Go to a karaoke bar with me and we will figure out who has a ‘better’ singing voice.

Being blind has an advantage there: i have no idea if people are covering their ears when i sing.

Maybe you should stick to singing in the shower.

nah, my showers are secret, otherwise my kids would make a mess of my kitchen.

“What would you think if I sang out of tune
Would you stand up and walk out on me?”

I do like Cocker’s version a lot. But I also enjoy the Beatles’ original.
