Hard To Swallow

You can’t believe everything that you read on the internet!  So-called facts are spread about humans swallowing an average of eight spiders each year while sleeping, and others indicate that the average person swallows 52 spiders over the course of their lifetime!  These ridiculous rumors are so widespread, yet they’re completely inaccurate.  The Princess Sleeping Beauty was supposed to fall into a deep sleep for 100 years and Rip van Winkle fell asleep and woke up twenty years later, so it is possible that a spider or two may have approached them and crawled into their mouths during their long slumbers.

In the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Rapunzel is trapped in a tower, so she lets down her long hair through a window so a prince can climb up and rescue her.  Rapunzel syndrome is named after this tale, and it is an extremely rare medical condition where hairs that a person has eaten become tangled and trapped in their stomach causing a hair ball to form, which extends into the small intestine.  Snow White longed for the beautiful apple, and when she took a bite and swallowed, she fell to the ground dead.  Little Red Riding Hood’s grandma was swallowed by the Big Bad Wolf and Hansel and Gretel were almost swallowed by the Wicked Witch.

Shakespeare printed his first play Titus Andronicus in 1594 and he definitely didn’t pull any punches when he was writing this gory play.  It has 14 deaths, brutal rape scenes, mutilation and cannibalism.  Titus murders the sons of his rival Tamora, Queen of the Goths, and later feeds their remains to her in a pie.  Jupiter had a son by his priestess Semele, who he named Bacchus, and one day some of the Titans kidnapped him by luring him away with marvelous toys.  While baby Bacchus was gazing at his own image in a mirror, the Titans sliced his throat with a sacrificial knife, and then they cut him up into pieces and first boiled, then roasted him.  Jupiter was attracted by the smell of cooking, and when he realized what was being cooked, he killed the Titans with a thunderbolt and then he resurrected Bacchus.

In the movie, The Help, Minny is famous for her chocolate-custard pies, and many people have hired her just to get their hands on her cooking.  Minny’s food is so good that her employers will tolerate her ‘sass’ and outspoken personality just so they can continue eating her food.  After Miss Hilly jeopardizes Minny’s chances of ever finding work again, Minny makes a chocolate custard pie including a special ingredient of her own feces, and watches Hilly savor two slices of it before telling her the truth.

Life brings us many things that are hard to accept or otherwise known as bitter pills to swallow.  People who have a hard time swallowing may choke on their food or liquid when trying to swallow.  Dysphagia is a another medical name for difficulty swallowing.

  1. The spider thing – never live in a house while it’s being renovated. I got a spider trying to hide out in my ear, and yes, I did swallow one – and got bitten on the lip!
As far as I know, the only time spiders got too close while I slept – and I don’t want to know if there were others!

Loved ‘The Help’ – second best story I ever read.

    1. I imagine that I can start believing what I am reading on the internet again. That must have creeped you out knowing that you swallowed a spider. I guess I would drink like a gallon of tea or something to wash it down if that ever happened to me. I saw the movie ‘The Help’ and it really made me laugh.

      1. The one in the ear was worse – it didn’t want to come out! And it was big! they can squish themselves into tiny places, and stick the pincers out, ready to defend a nice, warm, protected den. that was the hospital trick, where the doc said ‘don’t live in a house while renovating’ – the bite to the lip just burned for a few hours (and I think I’ve eaten worse than spider, so … shrug). One bite though, from a red-back (you’d call it a black widow? same family) – got me on the back of the neck while I had my hair up – now, that one hurt for Days, got a huge red lump, and got me three days off work. I have only recently begun to not freak out at spiders (sort of).

      2. That is so distressing. You are very brave for being able to handle all of this so well. I have never been afraid of any bugs, because I have never met one that I could not squash. This would make a nice story for you to tell the next time that you get interviewed about one of your books.
