The Added U

Americans have standardized around different spelling conventions from other parts of the world. Many British and American words are spelled are different.  The differences often come about because British English has tended to keep the spelling of words it has absorbed from other languages (e.g. French), while American English made an effort to standardize around simpler spellings, thus it has adapted the spelling to reflect the way that the words actually sound when they’re spoken.

British English words that end with the letters ‘our’ usually end in ‘or’ in the American language, where we drop the U.  English has many such dilemmas, where you need to decide whether to use color or colour, but this should just depend on your location.
