Prom Date

The prom should be fun, an event for all high school students without any misgivings or any pressure of finding the right date to bring.  For some students the prom can be a dreaded event, as shopping can be boring, but deep down inside of everyone there is a little part of us that loves to get dressed up.  It might take painstaking effort to carefully curl your hair or tie the perfect bow-tie, but when that moment arrives when you look in the mirror just before you leave and see that all of your hard work paid off, that should make you smile.

A brother and a sister, twins who were both Seniors in High School and who had both missed their Junior Prom were each getting nervous because it was getting near their Senior Prom night and neither of them had a date for it.  The girl Alice approached her brother Doug and said “Hey, you got a date for the prom yet?”  Doug said “No, do you have someone lined up for me to take?”  Alice responded, “You might say that, as I was thinking that you could take me to the prom as your date.”  Doug said “No, I can’t take you.  You must be kidding, you’re my sister!” Alice said, “Well, are you taking somebody else out?”  To this Doug replied, “You know I don’t have a date, Sis.”  Alice said, “I don’t either and I really want to go.  We both want to go to the prom, don’t we?”

Doug nodded and she continued, “We could go with each other.”  Doug could not see anything wrong with her reasoning, so he told his sister that if neither of them had a date by Wednesday evening that he would take her to the prom.  Wednesday evening rolls around and neither of the siblings had a date, so Doug tells Alice that he will take her to the prom on Friday.  At the prom, both of them have a good time.  Doug is actually glad that his sister talked him into taking her.  Then, while he is standing at the punch bowl, his sister comes up to him again and says, “Hey, brother, let’s dance.”

Doug is perplexed and he looks around to make sure that nobody heard his sister say that and then he responds, “Look, Sis I have to admit that you had a good idea about us going to the prom together, but I’m not going to dance with you, as that would make me feel silly.  You do look kind of hot and that dress looks perfect on you, but brothers do not dance with their sisters.”  Alice said, “Don’t be so shy.  Look over there, Jimmy Conner is dancing with his cousin Regina.  So why can’t you dance with your sister?”  Doug caved and said, “Oh all right.”  They danced to a slow number and Alice held Doug tight.  The rest of the prom passed by and finally it was over and it was time to go.  Both of them have had a wonderful evening.

After they leave, Doug gets behind the wheel of the car, and his sister looks over at him and says, “Let’s not go straight home.”  Doug gives her a curious look and says, “What on Earth would we do if we don’t go back home?”  Alice said, “I don’t really know, but maybe we could just drive around for a bit.”  Doug agrees, and after they have driven around for a while, out in the country, she looks over at him again and says, “Do you want to find some place to park?”  Doug knows it’s important to make sure that he is being there for his family, especially if they need him to fill in a void, but he was not sure where this was going, so he said, “Are you crazy, you’re my sister, and I can’t go parking with you!”

Alice said, “Who said anything about us going parking?  Let’s just pull over somewhere and talk for a while, if that is okay?  It has been a busy year for both of us and it has been a long time since we had a real chance to talk with each other?”  Doug is tired of driving around anyway, so he pulls the car over where they are, which happens to be on a secluded back road.  After a few minutes of idle talk, she looks over at him and says, “Why don’t you kiss me?”  Doug was flabbergasted and he said, “Do you want me to kiss you on your cheek?  You’ve been suggesting a lot of weird things lately, you know that?  We are twins and I do feel an emotional connection with you and when we are together, I feel loved and cared for.  I don’t want to cross any weird boundary that might end up separating us, so I’m not going to kiss you, mainly because you’re my sister!”

Doug reached for the ignition switch to start the car, but Alice reached out and took his hand and said, “I know that I’m your sister.  You have mentioned that several times tonight.  You are my brother and we should love each other.  Why shouldn’t we kiss each other on such a romantic night, if we feel like doing it?  You like Star Wars and Luke Skywalker enjoyed smooching with his sister Leah.”  Alice kissed Doug on his cheek and Doug kissed his sister back.  After a few minutes of kissing, she whispered in his ear, “Come on.  Let’s do it.”  Doug said, “Do what?”, but he had a pretty good idea of what his sister had in mind.  Doug started saying, “I can’t do that with you, you’re my …”, but his voice trailed off and he was not able to finish his sentence.  While Doug was on top of her, Alice murmured, “You know, you’re a lot lighter than Dad is.”  Doug said, “I know, mom says the same thing about me.”

  1. Hey Jim, Namaste 🙂

I’m all for the Maverick flier trailblazing new ground and you’ve certainly reached into new air-space with this…quite a departure from what I have previously read and enjoyed of your writing. It’s a unsettling subject.

I remember watching Star Wars in a cinema in West Wales when it first came out back in the 70’s. The film captivated the imagination of a young wannabe Jedi. Lela is not revealed to be Luke’s twin sister until 1983 with the release of Return Of The Jedi, although by then they had already had their screen-kiss in The Empire Strikes Back. It is a highly contentious point between Star Wars fans as to whether George Lucas ever intended for Luke and Lela to be brother and sister. I don’t profess in knowing the full story only that a very early draft of Empire Strikes Back written by Beckett exists firmly hinting towards a character called Nellith and not Lela as Luke’s sister.

I’ve just come away from reading your post on Nero and his mother: again a dark subject but one that is factually true within ancient civilizations when blood-lineage was essential for progressing the royal line. One could imagine even in our own time there being cultures or nomadic tribes who practice similar rights.

Many thanks Jim. Enjoy your evening and the new week ahead. Take care fella 🙂

    Namaste 🙂

    1. I enjoy your writing JIm, it’s a pleasure to stop by 🙂

Nothing wrong in being a Maverick, it’s how all heroes start out before becoming progressing to become legend 😉

‘May the Force be with you!’

      Namaste 🙂

  2. taboo… incest, revelation of sexual abuse or is this backwoods redneck stereo typical behavior…. maybe a joke that came with a twist….perhaps an unfinished tale my next paragraph would be how someone spotted them doing the deed and how Child protective service and Police raided the home and took every one in and charged them with some twisted charges…….
