Joy To The World

The thing in my life that brings me the most joy/happiness/contentment is my writing and I have found that writing about music is the most satisfying and it may be what I do best.  I have always felt that music can enrich anyone’s life and writing about music allows me to approach the inexpressible thing that makes a piece beautiful or powerful or difficult to grasp.  Music by its very nature can communicate without words and it is often difficult to translate the non-verbal sounds.  This can become a conundrum, because I need to use words in order to communicate my thoughts about music, but I welcome the challenge.  I have to state my opinions and make arguments that based on my observations and be articulate enough to explain what the music is saying to me.  I have developed a confidence and enthusiasm in dealing with music topics of all types, but especially the music that I like.

Writing about music is not that much different from writing about anything else, as I need to make a plausible, interesting and convincing argument, while including interesting ideas or evidence, and make a clear presentation.  I am not a music expert, but I do feel that I can hold my own and I am a writer that is capable of writing an essay that is organized into a coherent structure and has an elegant style.  If I want to write something that is good, than I need to become a subject matter expert, which means that I need to do research, lots of research for the sake of clarity and I have to precisely understand all of the technical terms, along with the subtleties.  Writing about music is all about making sense and making a logical explanation, because all music is open to interpretation.

Dogs are warm and cozy and they definitely beat a hot water bottle or even an electric blanket when it gets cold at night.  People do let dogs into their beds for shared warmth and really cold nights are referred to as three dog nights, because that is when you might let three dogs into your bed.  Three Dog Night was formed in 1967 and they consisted of vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron and soon after Jimmy Greenspoon (keyboards), Joe Schermie (bass), Michael Allsup (guitar), and Floyd Sneed (drums) joined the group.  Most of the songs that Three Dog Night performed and recorded were written by others.  Hoyt Axton wrote the song, ‘Joy To The World’ which topped the pop charts in the spring of 1971.

Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine
And he always had some mighty fine wine
Singin’
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls now
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me
If I were the king of the world
Tell you what I’d do
I’d throw away the cars and the bars and the war
Make sweet love to you
Sing it now
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me
You know I love the ladies
Love to have my fun
I’m a high life flyer and a rainbow rider
A straight shootin’ son-of-a-gun
I said a straight shootin’ son-of-a-gun
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the world
Joy to you and me
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls now
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me
I want to tell you
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls

  1. Great response Jim, writing about music can be challenging there is no doubt. I agree finding the appropriate words is so often the challenge. I remember well Thre Dog Night and ‘Joy to the world’…..it was so easy to sing along to it. Thanks so much for adding your thoughts to this week’s Tale weaver.
