Same As Always Nothing Out of the Ordinary

Typical an absurd lie or excuse used quite often, lame, and silly things that have been stated before.  The idiom belongs to the world of entertainment.  If you go to a musical concert or any show, off course you would like to see and hear fresh and different things not the same old stuff.  You will expect or like to see new and interesting performances thus this expression refers to the dull and dreary things being said or used before.  It also means to give same excuse repeatedly, or to lie in order to get rid of a bad situation.

The expression, ‘Same Old Song and Dance’ seems to have originated during the Korean War, when American soldiers tried to make indigenous personnel use English phrases.  What is generally assumed or believed is that an American GI wanted a Korean subordinate to do something which was similar to something the Korean has already learned how to do, the same old rigmarole, thus the American used the expression ‘same-o, same-o’.  GI’s returning to the States took the phrase with them, but mainstream Americans missed the meaning entirely.  This might have evolved as part of a pidgin (a grammatically simplified form of a language, used for communication between people not sharing a common language), stemming from the phrase ‘same old same old’.

This reminds me of a song that was written and recorded by the American singer Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band in 1978 titled, ‘Still the Same’.  This song is either about gambling or love or both, and it seems to tell the story of a person who uses people to get what they want by using charm and sex as a tool. Seger said that this song is an amalgamation of characters that he met when he first went to Hollywood.

Bob Seger – Still The Same (live in San Diego ’78)

You always won, everytime you placed a bet
You’re still damn good, no one’s gotten to you yet
Everytime they were sure they had you caught
You were quicker than they thought
You’d just turn your back and walk
You always said, the cards would never do you wrong
The trick you said was never play the game too long
A gambler’s share, the only risk that you would take
The only loss you could forsake
The only bluff you couldn’t fake
And you’re still the same
I caught up with you yesterday
Moving game to game
No one standing in your way
Turning on the charm
Long enough to get you by
You’re still the same
You still aim high
There you stood, everybody watched you play
I just turned and walked away
I had nothing left to say
‘Cause you’re still the same
You’re still the same
Moving game to game
Some things never change
You’re still the same

    1. Thanks and yea Bob Seger is great. I always covered a song when I entered your challenge, but it seems that after reading the other posts, I am the only one doing that. Anyway I do love this challenge.
