No, this is not a James Bond article, I am referring to the word that Islamic people use when they refer to God. Many people perceive Islam as being a violent religion, mostly because of the radical Islamist insurgents that get on the news after they do terrible terrorist deeds, but most Muslims are peaceful. The 1.8 billion Muslims that are on Earth today, make up almost a quarter of the world’s population, so of course there will be some bad grouped in with the good. In 632, Muslims were split into two different groups, those being Sunni Islam and Shia Islam and this tore apart the Middle East. Assignations and massacres took place over who was to be the rightful ruler after the death of the Prophet Muhammad. These two sects have co-existed for centuries and they share many fundamental beliefs and practices, agreeing on certain things and while disagreeing on other things and while there are Shiite Muslims who do not think Sunnis count as Muslim at all, some Sunnis hold the same thought about the Shiites. Most of the Muslims in the world are Sunni and they live in the Arab world, however Iran is mostly Shiite being 90% of the population and Saudi Arabia is estimated at being 95% Sunni. The leaders of Islam, the heads of this religion located in Saudi Arabia and Iran, are on opposing sides of this religious argument, which is at the heart of Islam and they are the ones speaking for the religion, not the Islamic moderates.
The word jihad can mean ‘holy war’ or it can refer to the struggle that it takes to be a good Muslim. ISIS or ISIL, the Sunni jihadist group residing in the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is a brutal organization that rounds up and executes anyone who shows the slightest bit of resistance toward its domination. Al-Qaeda is a militant Sunni Islamist multi-national organization that was founded by Osama bin Laden. The Taliban rose to power as ‘holy warriors’ or ‘freedom fighters’ and they are a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist political movement that is currently waging war in Afghanistan. Hezbollah is a Shiite Islamist militant group. Northeastern Nigeria has an Islamist terrorist group called Boko Haram, which has been menacing Nigerian communities for years. Terrorists use the word jihad to mean an all-out-war against the so-called enemies of Islam. Islamic men that engage in terror believe they will enter Paradise if they commit suicide terrorism, and they will be rewarded with 72 virgins, but this is not written in the Quran. If we go back 50 years in time, we will see that Islamist radicals did not exist, as there were no major conflicts involving this kind of terror that is now being waged around the world.
Most Muslims are peaceful moderate practitioners of mainstream Islam, who view Islamic terrorism as a violation of their sacred texts. Many Muslims incorporate values of respect, care for others, humour, generosity and the search for knowledge and justice, instead of hating infidels into what they teach their children. They understand that suicide bombings are wrong and they are not an acceptable way to express your faith. I am by no means an expert on religion, but I have heard that the Quran calls on Muslims to submit to Allah, and it also orders them to subdue people of other religions until they are in a full state of submission to Islamic rule. People can be forced into submission, or submission can take place by peaceful means. This sounds a bit aggressive to me and I feel that the only way that the world’s problems will ever be solved is if we all learn to show tolerance toward others.
Although there was turbulence between Muslims and Jews from the beginning, Muhammad never murdered anyone and he did not tell others to kill. Muhammad had visions of the archangel Gabriel, who revealed to him a verse from the Quran. The Quran is a collection of words that Muhammad attributed to Allah and this is the central religious text for Muslims. The Hadith is a collection of narrations of the life and deeds of Muhammad that give validity to Muslims. The Sira is his recorded biography. The Sunnah is said to be Muhammad’s way of life, it contains what he taught and it explains how Islamic law should be instituted. Muslims believe that Allah also spoke to Adam, Noah and Moses besides Muhammad.
I have this vision that Allah is crying as he is looking down on his people. I don’t think that Allah is happy about the way this religion that is devoted to him is evolving. Most Muslims don’t have any control over what the terrorists groups are doing and they do not need to apologize for what these radicals are doing. These terrorists are not pleasing Allah, because they all have their own agendas and they are not being a benefit to society. It is very clear that Muslims do condemn terrorism because they are outraged at the atrocities and are often victims of it. The media usually doesn’t bother to cover all of the Muslim leaders that have denounced terrorism which was committed in the name of Islam over and over again. I am certain that this terrorist behavior is making Allah very sad, and I don’t have anything more to say about this for fear that I might piss off the wrong person.
